WEBSTER, N.Y. — Crosswalks are creating some confusion along the Hojack Trail in Webster. While many intersections have walk signals, blinking lights, or countdown timers, these crossings do not.
A News10NBC viewer named Kristen asked: “What is the law for the crosswalks on Klem, Holt, Hard, Gravel, and Drumm roads in Webster, crossing for the Hojack trail? I understand pedestrians have the right of way if they are in the crosswalk, but are we supposed to stop at these crosswalks because we see people waiting?”
The Hojack Trail spans roughly five miles through Webster. Its crosswalks are marked with yellow signs and white lines on the road. News10NBC’s Emily Putnam visited one of the Hojack Trail crossings on Holt Road, where the speed limit is 35 miles per hour. It looks like a standard crosswalk, and with most standard crosswalks, drivers are required to stop and let people pass. But Webster police said that’s not always the best way to approach these Hojack Trail crossings.
Webster Police said cars should yield to pedestrians when they’re actively crossing. But Kristen asked what if someone is waiting to cross on the side of the road. Webster PD says, “if a driver sees someone waiting, the safest move may be to continue at speed so they can cross behind you during a natural break in traffic. Stopping abruptly could create a dangerous situation (rear-end accident), as it confuses other drivers who aren’t looking for a reason to stop.”
If you see someone waiting to cross, use your best judgment. You may want to slow down and gesture to the person walking that you’re giving them the right of way.
