The FIA Formula 2 Championship is heading into uncharted territory in 2026, as organisers pivot swiftly to reshape the calendar following early-season disruptions.
With two Middle Eastern rounds in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia cancelled, the series has found an exciting solution – bringing its rising stars to North America for the first time.
In a move that adds fresh energy to the championship, Formula 2 will now appear alongside Formula 1 at two of its most high-profile events. The streets of Miami and the iconic circuit in Montreal will host the replacement rounds, ensuring the 2026 calendar remains intact at 14 races.
The reshuffle comes after planned April stops in Sakhir and Jeddah were called off, due to events in the Middle East, leaving a gap that series organisers have wasted little time in filling.
Now, Miami will stage round two on May 1–3, followed closely by Montreal hosting round three on May 22–24—marking a historic first for the championship on North American soil.
North America beckons for F2
The addition of Miami and Montreal is more than just a logistical fix – it represents a long-awaited expansion for the series. By joining the Formula 1 support bill at both events, Formula 2 gains a broader global stage while maintaining the competitive rhythm of its season.
Stefano Domenicali welcomed the revised calendar as a strong outcome after an unexpected setback.
“While it has not been possible to go ahead with the two races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia this month, and we look forward to being back with our passionate fans there as soon as possible, it is great news for our fans, the drivers and the teams that Formula 2 will be racing in Miami and Montreal,” he said.
For FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the changes ensure stability remains at the heart of the championship.
“Following the necessary changes to the calendar at the start of the season, the addition of these new rounds ensures the FIA Formula 2 Championship remains strong and balanced, and able to deliver for our teams, drivers and fans,” he said.
A long-awaited expansion
The decision also fulfills a long-standing ambition within the series to break into the North American market.
According to Bruno Michel, the opportunity is both strategic and exciting.

“It will be a great new challenge for our teams and our drivers, who have all welcomed the news with enthusiasm.

While Formula 2 has secured its replacement rounds, questions remain for the FIA Formula 3 Championship, which has yet to announce an alternative after losing its Bahrain event.
Meanwhile, the F1 Academy has already adapted, introducing a revised format that will see three races at selected rounds, including Montreal and Austin.
