GATES, N.Y. — Gates Chili opened “Spartan Park” on Monday, unveiling a pair of all-turf fields for their baseball, softball, soccer, and lacrosse teams.
“We’re super proud to be Spartans here in Gates Chili and looking forward again to a great season out here and a great spring,” Dr. Mitchell Ball said.
Lisa Young, Gates Chili director of physical education, health and athletics, addressed student-athletes and the greater school community at the opening.
“Represent this field with integrity. Compete with heart, support one another and always remember that when you step onto this field, you carry the pride of an entire community with you,” Young said.
Ball said the student-athletes have been practicing on the fields for a few weeks. After the unveiling, two games — one baseball and one softball — were played on Monday night.
“It allowed us and afforded us the opportunity to provide great spaces for our students,” Ball said. “The culmination of years of planning and hard work on behalf of our architectural firm, our construction management firm, our Board of Education, and a number of stakeholders throughout the district working really hard to put together a project like this that allowed us and afforded us the opportunity to provide great spaces for our students.”
Ball added that this project is just one part of a broader initiative within the district.
“In many ways, this marks the culmination of our district wide capital project ‘Building Brighter Futures’. Over the past several years, this project has transformed learning spaces across Gates Chili. Here at the middle school, we just opened a new music wing that provide students with room to create, collaborate and perform at both the middle and high school.”
“The project would not have been possible without the support of our voters and the Board of Education, and the dedication of our facilities, teams, architects, contractors and staff members who helped bring this vision to life. Most importantly, this space was built for our students, it belongs to them,” Ball said.
The fields will also house the district’s feeder programs and be rented out to other baseball leagues for years to come, Ball said.
