ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Lilac Festival is less than a month away, and officials say to expect a magnificent bloom this year.
The warm weather expected leading up to the festival should keep the buds right on track. But the real reason for the expected great bloom is because of the cold, snowy winter.

“Lilacs require a period of dormancy. So if you have a really warm winter it can mess up the blooms for the spring. And also lead to things like mildew and stuff that’s really not healthy for the plant,” officials said.
Highland Park is home to more than 1,200 lilac shrubs and 500 varieties. In a USA Today readers’ choice poll, the Lilac Festival was voted second-best flower festival in the U.S.

The Lilac Festival begins Friday, May 8 and continues through May 17. This year’s festival will feature some nationally touring artists for its music headliners at the KeyBank Center Stage. Some of those headliners include Cruel Summer, The Lone Bellow, Eggy, and more.

The festival all started with a local horticulturist, John Dunbar, planting lilacs in Highland Park and thousands of people showing up to see them. It features the most extensive lilac collection in the northeast.
