“I always feel when someone is really exceptionally talented at something, they were pushed to become exceptional by some kind of trauma,” he said. “I don’t know if that’s always true, but at least dramatically it is.”

“He’s mentally clear but leaning toward depression a little bit, having issues with antidepressants and not feeling quite right because of them,” MacDonald says. “That makes him question what kind of future he wants to have. Does he want to stay at Gaffney? Does he want to possibly go teach at a medical school? What the stroke does, and the dream sequences [he experiences as a result] elucidate for him, is that he wants to continue his work at Gaffney.”
That said, MacDonald also hints that things will be different upon his return. Dr. Theo Rabari (Manish Dayal), has been subbing for Dr. Charles, and there will be some conflict coming down the pike between the two of them. Some additional conflict, we should say, because the two clashed previously over a study Dr. Rabari was doing. So, stayed tuned.
He tells Parade, “Actors, what we look for is obstacles, we look for problems, we want every day actually to be the worst day in our life. But you can’t always have that, and you don’t always want that, trust me, it’s exhausting, but I just had a lot of fun doing it.”
