On the final day of the 2026 Australian Open Championships, 17-year-old Sienna Toohey set a new Australian Age Record in the 50 breaststroke, touching in 30.39 to earn the gold medal.

WOMEN’S 50 BREAST – FINAL

Australian Record – 30.05, Chelsea Hodges, 2022 Oceanian Record – 30.05, Chelsea Hodges (AUS), 2022

GOLD – Sienna Toohey, 30.39 SILVER – Mia O’Leary, 30.75 BRONZE – Lily Koch, 31.25

Toohey dropped almost two tenths from her personal best 30.58, which she swam at the 2025 World Championships, pushing closer towards the 30-second mark.

She took just over five tenths off Leiston Pickett‘s 2009 record time of 30.90. She also came in under Pickett’s 18-year-old record time of 30.57, making her the fastest junior swimmer in Australian history in the event.

Toohey will now hold the 50 breaststroke record for 14, 15, 16, and 17-year-olds with her being a near lock to take down the 18-year-old record next year.

She is also getting closer to the Australian record of 30.05 set by Chelsea Hodges in July of 2022 at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Toohey added this win to her 100 breaststroke gold of 1:06.69 and her 200 breast silver of 2:26.43.

She will also move up to 5th in the world this season, coming in just seven hundredths behind Japan’s Satomi Suzuki, who swam 30.32 at the Japan Swim in March.
