The Yin and Yang of the DJ Moore Trade ...Middle East

This clip of DJ Moore entering the Buffalo Bills facility as the offseason training program begins stopped me in my tracks:

DJ Moore spent just three seasons with the Chicago Bears, but it sure feels like he was here longer than that.

Maybe it is because he didn’t miss a game in his three years with the team, playing in all 51 regular-season games from 2022 until 2025, as well as both of the team’s postseason contests this past season. Perhaps it is because Moore made an impact on the field (a 1,364-yard season in Year 1 and two of the most iconic catches in franchise history in his final season) and off of it (he was the team’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award recipient in 2025) during his tenure with the Bears.

Whatever it is, I must admit that it will take some time for me to get used to not seeing No. 2 catch passes from QB1 for Chicago’s football team.

With that being said, I’m glad that DJ Moore was traded to a team that is expected to be competitive in 2026. But that pales in comparison to the excitement that Buffalo Bills Head Coach Joe Brady feels about having Moore on his squad. Brady was the Carolina Panthers’ offensive coordinator in 2020 and 2021 when Moore posted back-to-back 1,100-yard receiving seasons. It has been four seasons since Moore and Brady were together. And while Moore’s production in Chicago dipped in 2025, Brady doesn’t think a fall-off is on the horizon.

“Five years is a long time,” Brady said via NFL Media’s Bobby Kownack. “But the player that I turned on the tape wasn’t any different in terms of the way that he moved, the skill set, the opportunity, the big plays, using him in a bunch of different ways. I saw that, and I didn’t see a guy that has had any drop-off. I saw a guy that there’s a clear vision for how we’re going to utilize him and get the ball in his hands. I know him and Josh, there’s been a lot of work this offseason getting them on the same page, but I’m really excited about where that’s gonna go.”

The two sides of the DJ Moore trade

While there is excitement from Buffalo’s Joe Brady (for obvious reasons) when it comes to the DJ Moore trade, the vibe from his counterpart in Chicago strikes a more somber tone.

This quote (via The Athletic’s Dan Wiederer) from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson on the DJ Moore trade has stuck with me since I saw it cross my timeline:

“A lot of factors went into it. I love DJ. Shoot, I got a little emotional when the trade happened. He came in and he made his rounds saying goodbye to the coaches and Ryan (Poles) and his crew. It hurts because I viewed him as one of the leaders. Yet the business is the business.

“We had to make some decisions in terms of salary cap and things of that nature. I think the best thing for him is, he’s going to a great situation. He’s got a history with Joe Brady. I think he’s very excited to play with another talented quarterback in Josh Allen. I think we’re putting him in a great spot. I’ve been a part of some of those trades in my past where you move on from a guy and he’s not necessarily going to a great situation. I’m happy for him. Yet I feel like it was probably the move we needed to make.”

It makes sense that the Bears’ head coach was emotional after the DJ Moore trade. Johnson saw Moore buy into the team-first mentality, earn his trust, and play his best ball in the most important games of the year. In my book, that is a coaching win. So many first-year coaches struggle to get established players to buy into a new culture. But Ben got it done with DJ, which makes me think it can happen with anyone moving forward.
