ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A man accused of threatening a nurse and security officers with a loaded handgun at Rochester General Hospital is due in court on Wednesday afternoon.

Gregory Strickland, 35, is set to appear in Rochester City Court to answer to charges of menacing, menacing a peace officer, and criminal possession of a weapon. During his arraignment on Saturday, he pleaded not guilty, and the judge set his bail at $50,000.

Rochester Police say Strickland was a visiting patient on the fourth floor of the hospital on Friday afternoon, when he became upset with a nurse and threatened her with a gun. Security responded, and police say Strickland also threatened multiple security officers.

Police say Strickland dropped the gun, and an RGH security officer took him into custody. No one was injured.

A hospital spokesperson said RGH’s weapons screening system flagged Strickland as he went through, which alerted the security team. The spokesperson said the man refused additional weapons screening and went straight to the hospital. According to RGH, he was found and arrested within minutes. Here’s the statement RGH released:

“An individual with a weapon entered through the main entrance of Rochester General Hospital (RGH) last week, and passed through our Evolv weapons screening system, which is part of our multi-layered security approach. The system alerted, and a security officer stopped the man who then failed to comply with additional screening requests and proceeded into the hospital.”

“Hospital security immediately initiated established response protocols. The individual was found within minutes and was taken into custody by an armed RRH security officer with New York State Peace Officer status.”

“Since deploying Evolv screenings in 2024, more than 2.5 million people have been screened at RGH. While no single tool or practice can prevent every threat, layered security measures play an important role in reducing risk. We are actively reviewing this incident to strengthen our procedures and address identified vulnerabilities.”

“Rochester General Hospital takes the safety of our patients, team members and visitors very seriously, which is why we continue to invest significantly in hospital security. In the coming months, RRH security staff members who are currently undergoing Peace Officer training will graduate from the academy, further strengthening our security presence.”

Hospitals must balance open access to care with strong security measures.  We remain committed to evaluating and enhancing our security strategies to provide a safe environment for everyone who comes through our doors.”
