GATES, N.Y. — Last week’s heavy rain left a trail of damage across the area, and for some homeowners, the cleanup is just beginning. Susan Triano, who lives in Gates, said fast-rising floodwaters rushed into her home in the middle of the night, causing serious damage.
News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic sat down with Triano to hear about that night. “We woke up and there was water starting to come into our home. A lot of water,” Triano said. “We opened our front door, and the water was high on the garage door.”
“We went running into the house, got down the stairs into our family room, and the water was just cascading down our basement,” she said. “Our basements, stairs. It was filling our guest room, our bathroom.”
The next morning, Gates firefighters pumped out the water. That’s when Triano found the damage. “Our 50-gallon water tank had been lifted up, thrown against the walls in our basement,” Triano said. “Five or 6 pipes had been snapped, which had caused the water to start flying from our pipes, along with flying from the outside, causing more damage.”
Triano believes if the town kept up on cleaning out the drainage ditch in the neighborhood, this wouldn’t have happened. She pointed to the difference between her drainage ditch and the one the town is supposed to maintain.
News10NBC out to Gates Town Supervisor Cosmo Giunta on the matter. Giunta noted the house has had the open drainage ditch in its backyard for 70 years. Saying the bursted pipes caused the basement to fill up even more.
Triano believes the systems in place failed.
“The rain came and the sewer system failed. The water drainage system failed,” Triano said. “The maintenance system, the maintenance that should have been done throughout the year by the county and the towns. They were not done the right way. They weren’t done, period. And I think that the upgrades that should have been done throughout the years were not done. And I think that that’s what caused all these problems.”
Triano said she had no idea if she was on the FEMA flood map. She is now trying to reach out to FEMA to see if it can help in any way.
Triano said she hopes to get help or any advice from the Town of Gates.
Supervisor Giunta said he doesn’t believe the system failed, but if she feels that way she has every right to file a claim against the town.
