Vowles hints at Williams breakthrough… after F1 summer break ...Middle East

Williams team principal James Vowles isn’t hiding the Grove-based outfit’s current struggles, but he insists that a massive transformation is in the works. However, it likely won’t materialize until after F1’s summer break.

Williams’ start to the season has been bluntly underwhelming. Regular Q1 exits have become the norm, and a solitary point in China stands as their only tangible reward so far.

For Vowles, the current hierarchy is a game of millimeters where being "good enough" is no longer an option. The mid-field is a shark tank, and Williams is currently the one bleeding. To break the cycle of Q1 exits, the team is looking toward the end of the European leg as the true starting gun for their season.

“You can see that bundle of cars around P5 to P7 is incredibly close, there’s not a lot in it,” Vowles said, surveying a landscape where minor errors lead to major casualties.

“So the issue with the word consistently is even those teams are not consistently scoring points, you have to be elevated and ahead of all that.”

Rather than pouring resources into minor, incremental "band-aid" fixes for the upcoming summer races, Vowles is pointing toward a horizon further down the road.

“Right now what I can really forecast forward is we have a huge amount of work going all the way through and beyond the August break to effectively add performance to the car," he explained, quoted by RACER.

"Now, other teams will as well, it’s a relative game. Some of that performance I think on the stronger end will be coming post-August break.”

Sacrificing the Sunday spectacle

The most telling sign of Williams' speculative pivot came during the closing stages of the Japanese Grand Prix. While other teams fought for pride and minor positions, Alex Albon’s FW47 was turned into a high-speed guinea pig.

The team opted for multiple pit stops not to gain track position, but to treat the race as a live-fire wind tunnel test.

“We know we weren’t in a point-scoring position but equally we want to maximize our learning in all of these races while that is the case,” Vowles admitted, defending the unorthodox decision to experiment mid-race.

By adjusting the front wing and mapping downforce levels in real-time, Williams attempted to ensure that their digital simulations match the harsh reality of the asphalt.

“In order to correlate between track and our wind tunnel and CFD facilities, you can do a number of things," Vowles noted.

"For example, you sometimes see flo-viz being added to the car, being sprayed with paint. You sometimes see rakes being run, especially in a free practice – that’s clearly not something that we’re going to go and fit in a race."

Instead of those visible tools, the team utilized mechanical changes to verify their data.

“For us, what we were doing was actually going up and down on front wing angle and ensuring that what we were showing as a map for the amount of downforce we had at the front of the car but also at the rear of the car, correlated exactly across three or four different angles," Vowles added.

“What it helps us do is just make sure we haven’t got any other gains or losses we wouldn’t expect otherwise, and that the map we are using is somewhat correct as we move forward in the wind tunnel.”

If these "test races" pay off, the FW47 that emerges from the summer shutdown may be unrecognizable in its performance.

For now, however, Williams fans must painfully endure the wait, watching a team that is currently racing against its own data as much as its rivals.
