13 matches in IPL 2026 have been completed so far, and all teams have played at least two each. As has been the pattern in most matches, if not all, and which is usually the story every year, it is not the batting of a team that wins the IPL, but the bowling.
The IPL opener saw SRH score 201, whereas RCB achieved the target in only 15.4 overs. Eshan Malinga, Harshal Patel had economy rates well over 15, while Payne and Harsh Dubey were over 11. In the very next match, KKR scored 220, but still lost to MI by six wickets. The culprits were Vaibhav Arora (1/52), Varun Chakravarthy (0/48), Anukul Roy (0/15 in 1.1 overs), and Blessing Muzarabani (0/34 in 3 overs).
More recently, CSK could not defend 209 vs PBKS, while on account of slightly better bowling, RR defended 211 vs GT. Upon looking closely at the other matches also, one can easily gauge, the role that bowlers play in T20s, and how teams need to have really, really strong bowling line-ups. Perhaps, one of the best case-studies in IPL has to be that of defending champions RCB, who for a better part of history, suffered on account of poor bowling attack. While their batting was a matter of envy to others, bowling was largely in shambles.
To cut the long story short, a team’s chances of winning the title are directly proportional to their bowling might. So, it is only fair., that we rate all the bowing attacks in IPL 2026.
Take your pick — KKR or SRH
Sunrisers Hyderabad are missing Pat Cummins badly. There are fitness issues with Brydon Carse.. The team is then relying on Unadkat, Harshal Patel, Eshan Malinga, Harsh Dubey and Nitish Kumar Reddy. Yes, they have all performed in the past, but then the economy rates of these bowlers can be through the roof, and they just don’t have an established Indian or foreign bowling resource at their disposal for now.

Kolkata Knight Riders have been hampered be injuries & availability. First, Mustafizur Rahman was bought, and then withdrawn. Harshit Rana & Akash Deep were ruled out due to injuries. Matheesha Pathirana is yet to arrive, while Came Green can’t bowl yet. That leaves them with Muzarabani, Varun Chakravarthy, Sunil Narine and Anukul Roy, among a few domestic bowlers.

Chennai Super Kings don’t have a single bowling superstar in their bowling unit. They have the likes of Khaleel Ahmed, Noor Ahmad is their main spinner, Anshul Kamboj, Mukesh Choudhary, Gurjapneet, Akeal Hossein and Matt Henry. Just not the bowling attack you would trust, to defend 170-180. Again, they might perform collectively a few times, but a largely incomplete attack. Quality right arm off-spinner missing too.

Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants is a hit or a miss. They have the young pacers in the side, who fit, can be a big pain to the opposition. But injury/injuries is around the corner. Mayank Yadav is being preserved for now, Mohsin Khan is bowling well for now, Hasaranga injured, Shami is not quite the same.. in spin there is Rathi, Siddharth and Markram. So, on paper though it looks good, but injuries can be a serious issue for them.

No Hazlewood creates serious impact on RCB
One of the biggest reasons for RCB’s success last year was Josh Hazlewood. This year, one doesn’t know when he starts bowling. Yash Dayal isn’t part of the team for inexplicable reasons. So it is pretty much Bhuvi & Duffy, who have to manage with a few all-rounders. Experience of other bowlers is an issue too.

As for Delhi Capitals, Starc isn’t around as yet, but others look sorted. Their bowling line-up comprises of T Natarajan, Mukesh Kumar, Chameera, Auqib Nabi, one of the best T20 bowlers Lungi Ngidi, Kyle Jamieson and Kuldeep Yadav. Not to forget there is Axar Patel as well.

The best ones
There are some teams, who might not have the best international names, or the most famous Indian bowlers, but somehow they end up doing the job for the team. RR is one such team. Ashok Sharma was exceptional against GT, bowled in excess of 150 kmph.. Tushar Deshpande defended 11 runs in last over.
Jofra Archer is always there and there abouts. Ravi Bishnoi bagged four-fer too. Then Nandre Burger is dependable, so is Sandeep Sharma, and Vignesh Puthur.
Bowling prowess – 8/10
Gujarat Titans is there and there abouts. Prasidh Krishna has started off well with 4 scalps in 2 matches, Rabada has 3 in 2 matches.. Rashid Khan, though on the wane, is still doing well. They have the presence of Mohammed Siraj, and the new kid on the block, Ashok Sharma, who has already crossed the 154 kmph barrier. So, all the departments in their bowling look sorted for now.

Now, Punjab Kings bowling attack… is it the best, or the second best this year? Vijaykumar Vyshak with 5 wickets has been excellent for them so far. Chahal’s economy has only been 7, and the likes of Xavier Bartlett and Marco Jansen have stepped up too, but the only complaint is from Arshdeep Singh — their strike bowler — who is yet to bag a wicket in three matches. Against GT and CSK, he conceded over 40 runs, each, and the KKR encounter was washed out.
He has been erring in his line, especially at the death. Way too many extras in search of dot balls. But then he has been an excellent performer, and will bounce back soon.

MI on top of the pile. ft Jasprit Bumrah
It is for a given, that if you have Bumrah in your team, you have the best bowling attack. Those four overs guarantee you wickets, dots, and a lot of fear in the eyes of the batters. Somehow he has gone wicketless in the 2 matches, but guess what, his economy was only 8.75 when KKR scored 220. Against DC it was only 5.25 in 4 overs.

— R A T N I S H (@LoyalSachinFan) March 29, 2026In supporting role, Shardul Thakur has picked three wickets, Deepak Chahar’s economy has been 6.66, Santner in his one game was mighty effective too. Other bowlers on the roster are Hardik Pandya and Corbin Bosch. Will Jacks cannot be forgotten, and also Trent Boult could be lethal going forward.
