The astronaut is the 90th woman in world history to go into space and one of the first researchers to fly on a commercial spacecraft. Specializing in biomedical and thermodynamic fluid research, this modern mommy is also the Director of Human Spaceflight at the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences (IIAS). As if that’s not impressive enough. Gerardi also has her own Barbie doll. And no, we don’t mean she owns a doll—she is a Barbie.
As her colleagues blasted off on their own adventure to the moon, Gerardi was back here on Earth, giving birth to her second child. In a heartfelt Instagram post, the new second-time mama wrote, “The past 48 hours have been a blur of the best kind and yesterday was spent soaking in the fact that she’s really here.” Gerardi continued, opening up about the rough road to pregnancy, “I'm forever grateful we didn’t hit the brakes too soon on this IVF journey to complet out family. I’m still in pain and am mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically exhausted to my core, and I’m so grateful for all of it.”
