IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — A landslide on Carlsam Drive in Irondequoit continues to grow, forcing neighbors out of their homes and raising new concerns about infrastructure damage.
News10NBC reporter Declan Stablow visited the site and found the landslide has expanded since Saturday. Dave Stafford, who owns property near the slide, is losing more of his yard each day as land crumbles away.
A telephone pole sitting just feet from the edge of the ravine has become a major point of concern for Stafford and his neighbors. They worry the pole could come down as more land gives way. Stablow reached out to RG&E about possible damage from the pole. RG&E said the pole is stable right now, and their working with the homeowners on a plan to keep it that way.
An arborist also came by to look at Stafford’s trees, which are leaning toward the ravine. The arborist warned the trees could come down at any moment.
“If these trees come down before we can, you know, rectify the problem, then we’re going to be in a lot worse position because there won’t be any roots left, really, to stabilize that bank. And that’s the reason those cracks haven’t gotten bigger man, those roots are still there so the more we can do to keep those roots in the better but as soon as that washes out, we’re going to be pretty scared,” Stafford said.
Stablow emailed the Irondequoit Town supervisor asking what is being done to help the impacted families, who the financial burden lies on and if there are any concerns about the telephone pole. The town said it did not have a comment at this time.
At one point, the Department of Transportation came by to check out the damage but told the Staffords it was not the DOT’s responsibility. The DOT referred them to the Monroe County Soil and Water District for resources to help.
The Soil and Water District said it is aware of the situation and will visit the site this week.
