Well, North Carolina has brought in a major NBA coach to lead its program in 2026-27 and beyond. The team canned Hubert Davis after five seasons at the helm.
Shams Charania of ESPN reports that the Tar Heels are now closing in on former 10-year Denver Nuggets champ Michael Malone.
Malone, 54, was let go by the playoff-bound Nuggets with just three games remaining in the 2024-25 regular season — along with then-Denver team president Calvin Booth. All told, Malone posted a 471-327 regular season record with the Nuggets. He led Denver to a 44-36 postseason record, including two Western Conference Finals appearances and the 2023 championship.
North Carolina’s Alleged Malone Hire Shuts the Door on a Long-Rumored Possible Billy Donovan Destination
Stephen Lew-Imagn ImagesBulls head coach Billy Donovan has been linked to that gig for weeks. Now, a coach who’s found even greater pro-level success will take over instead.
Donovan, of course, did win back-to-back national championships while guiding a loaded Florida club that included Joakim Noah and Al Horford. In the NBA, he had some postseason success with the Oklahoma City Thunder, but has been trapped in basketball purgatory on an aimless Chicago team since 2020.
The 60-year-old Hall of Famer posted a 243-157 regular season record with the Thunder, and led the team to the playoffs in each of his five seasons with the franchise — although they only emerged out of the first round once, they did push the 2015-16 Warriors to seven games in the Western Conference Finals.
Across six rudderless seasons in Chicago, he’s made the playoffs just once — but he’s guided some tiny, tiny Bulls teams to the play-in tournament for three additional years, if that’s any consolation for the Reinsdorfs’ pocket books?
Matt Marton-Imagn ImagesDonovan’s Chicago record is a decidedly less-great 224-254.
Now, of course, Donovan isn’t going to UNC, so… does this mean he might reconsider sticking around and navigating this Bulls rebuild? Will owners Michael and Jerry Reinsdorf finally appreciate his value over the club’s horrific front office duo of Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley, and make a change there to keep Donovan in the Windy City?
