NBC 5 Chicago (WMAQ-TV) has announced two-time Emmy Award-winning journalist, veteran film/media critic and popular local/national media personality Richard Roeper will join the NBC 5 News team as its Entertainment & Culture Contributor beginning Friday, April 10. The announcement was made by Sally Ramirez, Senior Vice President of News, NBC 5 Chicago / Telemundo Chicago.

In his new role with NBC 5 Chicago, Roeper will deliver wide‑ranging coverage of the latest entertainment industry news and trends, along with his signature, influential film and television reviews. He will also examine major local and national news stories through a cultural lens, offering insight into their impact on Chicago audiences. Roeper will make regular appearances on afternoon and evening editions of NBC 5 News, frequent appearances on the station’s weekday lifestyle program Chicago Today, and deliver engaging content across the station’s growing digital and social platforms.

“Richard is a respected and notable voice in Chicago media,” said Ramirez. “His unparalleled insight into the entertainment industry, his unique cultural perspective, and his deep connection with the Chicago community make him an exceptional addition to our team. Richard’s voice will elevate our coverage and enrich the experience for viewers across all of our platforms.”

“Growing up in south suburban Dolton and having lived in the Chicago area my entire life, I’ve long been a fan and viewer of NBC 5 Chicago,” said Roeper. “I’m thrilled to be joining an incredible team led by (President & GM) Kevin Cross and the best newsroom leader in the business, Sally Ramirez, who have put together one of the very best on-air and behind-the-scenes teams in local television today. I’m ready to get to work and bring my insights, reviews, and more to NBC 5 Chicago viewers wherever and whenever they watch.”

With close to four decades of professional experience covering news, entertainment, and popular culture, Roeper has established himself as one of the nation’s premier media journalists and multimedia personalities.

Following the passing of legendary Chicago Tribune film critic Gene Siskel, Roeper earned his spot as co‑host of the nationally-syndicated TV series Ebert & Roeper in 2000, joining his fellow Sun‑Times colleague and decades‑long friend, the late Roger Ebert, for eight seasons, carrying on the massively-popular film review tradition established by Siskel & Ebert.

Roeper most recently spent eight years at ABC 7 Chicago (WLS‑TV), providing film and television reviews from 2018-2026, following an earlier four‑year run with the station from 2011-2015. His local television career also included two stints at Fox 32 Chicago (WFLD‑TV), first from 1993-2000 and again from 2015-2017, as well as three years with CBS 2 Chicago (WBBM‑TV). In addition, Roeper hosted a variety of shows and specials throughout the late 2000s and 2010s on Starz and Reelz.

Roeper has also been a familiar voice on Chicago radio airwaves over the years hosting or contributing to programs on a variety of stations including WGN AM 720, WLS-FM & WLS-AM and WLUP-FM & WLUP-AM, among others.

Among Roeper’s numerous appearances on national television talk shows and popular programs include guest spots on The Tonight Show, The TODAY Show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Entourage, Top Chef, Nightline, Live with Regis and Kelly, and The Daily Show.

Roeper is currently a contributing critic for RogerEbert.com and host of the podcast The Movie of Your Life with Richard Roeper. He is the author of multiple books on movies, pop culture, gambling, and urban legends, as well as the ups and downs of being a lifelong Chicago White Sox fan.

Roeper has earned multiple industry honors during his storied career, including two Chicago/Midwest Regional Emmy Awards, the National Headliner Award for “Consistently Outstanding Local Interest Column,” and the Illinois Associated Press Award for “Best Column,” among others.
