ROCHESTER, N.Y. — This week, State Police are starting a distracted driving enforcement campaign statewide to target drivers using electronic devices while driving.
The enforcement, known as “Put the Phone Away or Pay,” starts Monday, April 6, and goes until Monday, April 13. Troopers will use both marked State Police cars and unmarked cars, known as “Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement (CITE)” vehicles.
State Police say these vehicles help troopers “better observe violations from an elevated vantage point.” Although the vehicles blend in with traffic, State Police say they are still “clearly identifiable as emergency vehicles when emergency lighting is activated.”
During last year’s campaign, State Police say they issued over 22,800 tickets, including over 4,600 for distracted driving violations.
New York State law includes the following penalties for distracted driving:
First offense: Fine ranging from $50 to $200 Second offense within 18 months: Fine up to $250 Third or subsequent offense within 18 months: Fine up to $450 Probationary and junior drivers face a 120-day license suspension for a first offense. For a second offense that happens within six months, they could face a one-year revocation.According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 3,200 people died in the U.S. in 2024 as a result of distraction-affected crashes.
