We look ahead to Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League game at the Camp Nou with our Barcelona vs Atlético Madrid prediction and preview. Can Hansi Flick’s side take a lead to Madrid next week?
Barcelona vs Atlético Madrid: Key Stats
The Opta supercomputer heavily favours a Barcelona win, with Hansi Flick’s side coming out on top in 59.2% of the pre-match simulations, while Atlético Madrid are given just a 20.9% chance. Wednesday’s affair marks the fifth European meeting between these two sides, with all five coming at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League (also 2013-14 and 2015-16). Atletico have never won a Champions League away match against a fellow Spanish side, losing four of the five they have played (D1).Just three days after meeting in La Liga, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid will face off again, but this time in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Wednesday’s clash will be the fifth European meeting between the Spanish rivals, with each of the previous four also coming in the Champions League quarter-finals (two-legged ties in 2013-14 and 2015-16).
While Barcelona’s late 2-1 victory at the Metropolitano Stadium on Saturday strengthened their commanding seven-point lead at the top of La Liga, the one-off (or in this case, two-off) nature of Europe’s premier competition poses a different challenge.
Robert Lewandowski scored an 87th-minute winner in that league meeting to secure all three points after Marcus Rashford had earlier cancelled out Giuliano Simeone’s opener.
The result continued an impressive run for Hansi Flick’s side, who arrive unbeaten in their last nine matches in all competitions.
Barcelona also made a strong statement in the previous round. After a tight first leg in the last 16, they dismantled Newcastle United 7-2 in the return leg to seal an emphatic 8-3 aggregate win.
Indeed, since Flick’s appointment at the start of last season, Barcelona have scored more Champions League goals than any other side (73).
They haven’t, however, managed a clean sheet in any of their last 13 Champions League outings, which already marks their longest-ever run without one in European competition.
That vulnerability, often linked to Flick’s aggressive high defensive line, will offer a wounded Atlético side some encouragement as they look to keep their season afloat.
After losing pace in the title race a while ago, Diego Simeone’s side must turn their attention fully to cup competitions – the Copa del Rey and the Champions League – to keep their hopes of silverware alive.
But it won’t be easy by any measure. Atlético have never won a Champions League away match against Spanish opposition, losing four of their five such games (D1).
Atlético are also winless in their last six away knockout matches in the competition (D1 L5), with their last victory coming in a 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford in March 2022.
Simeone has also found it difficult to get the better of Flick in recent meetings, though that has rung true for many managers across Europe. Flick holds the highest win percentage of any manager with at least 10 Champions League matches under their belt, winning 31 of his 42 games (73.3%).
He also has the best record in knockout matches among managers with at least 10 games, winning 12 of 17 at 70.6%.
While Barcelona will have to navigate this tie without talisman Raphinha, who suffered a hamstring injury on international duty, Flick will be delighted to have an in-form Lamine Yamal to rely on. The youngster has recorded five goals and four assists in eight Champions League appearances this season.
Should he register another goal involvement against Atlético, he could become the youngest player to reach double figures in a single Champions League campaign (18 years, 269 days), surpassing Erling Haaland’s previous record set in 2019-20 (19y, 212d).
Atlético, meanwhile, will look to Julián Alvarez to lead their response. The Argentine has scored more goals (8), registered more assists (4) and created more chances (29) than any other Atléti player in this season’s Champions League. He has also applied more high-intensity pressures than any other player in the competition (702) in 2025-26.
Barcelona vs Atlético Madrid Head-to-Head
Atlético Madrid have lost only one of their previous four Champions League matches against Barcelona (W2 D1).
Simeone’s side have also eliminated the Catalans in both of their previous knockout stage ties – 2-1 on aggregate in both 2013-14 and 2015-16. Only Paris Saint-Germain have knocked Barcelona out of the European Cup/Champions League more often (three times).
Barcelona, however, are unbeaten in their last 25 matches against Atlético at the Camp Nou across all competitions (W17 D8), with their last home defeat a 3-1 league loss in February 2006.
Barcelona vs Atlético Madrid Prediction
Barcelona’s fine form and overall strong record against Atlético means they walk into Wednesday’s quarter-final as the obvious favourites according to the Opta supercomputer.
