PHOENIX – The buzz surrounding the 2026 Women’s Final Four has not been about the semifinal games themselves.

The discussion has been about the heated exchange between UConn head coach Geno Auriemma and South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley near the end of Friday’s first semifinal game at Mortgage Matchup Center.

On Saturday, Auriemma, whose Huskies lost 62-48 to Staley’s Gamecocks, issued a statement apologizing for his actions.

“There’s no excuse for how I handled the end of the game vs. South Carolina,” Auriemma said. “It’s unlike what I do and what our standard is here at Connecticut. I want to apologize to the staff and the team at South Carolina. It was uncalled for in how I reacted.

“The story should be how well South Carolina played, and I don’t want my actions to detract from that. I’ve had a great relationship with their staff, and I sincerely want to apologize to them.”

Staley spoke to the media Saturday ahead of the national championship game and addressed Auriemma’s statement.

“For me, no distractions at this time,” Staley said. “Concentrating on winning the national championship. That’s it.”

The Gamecocks’ coach was disappointed the situation between her and Auriemma has been the main talking point of the Women’s Final Four, but understood why it has become such a big storyline.

Staley was adamant her team would not be affected by the words exchanged between her and Auriemma.

“I grew up in the projects of North Philly, right?” Staley said. “Philly. 215, 267 … area code. So nothing can derail us or me from staying with the task at hand.

“There are a lot of distractions that are placed in your life. You either going to address them and then let it overcome you, or you stick with the task at hand. I’m choosing to stick with the task at hand.”

Staley added that she will talk about the situation further at a later date, but it will not be during Final Four weekend.
