Three More Cubs Prospect HRs: Kevin Alcantara (DESTROYED), Pedro Ramirez, and BJ Murray ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Yesterday, two Cubs prospects of note — James Triantos and Jefferson Rojas — launched homers worth celebrating. So we did! The former hit his second in as many days and the latter is just starting his big breakout season at Double-A. Today, we have three more to enjoy.

First up, Kevin Alcantara, who is on a bona fide HEATER to start the year at Iowa, which you just absolutely love to see.

The Jaguar absolutely DEMOLISHED that pitch, with a 110.2 MPH exit velocity and an astounding 440 feet of distance. That thing was crushed. But that wasn’t his first of the season.

Alcantara already had two homers in his first six games, plus two doubles, a single, and FOUR walks against just five strikeouts, before today. And I am watching this performance very closely, because if he is finally putting it all together, watch out. Alcantara has long had some of the most upside of any prospect in the Cubs system, it’s just that he comes with some risk, too. But so far so good, as he’s posted a 1.025 OPS through his first seven games of the season.

At just 23 years old, with his frame and ability to play center field, Alcantara might be on our radar sooner than later. And that’s really great news, because both Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki are free agents at the end of this season. So there’s definitely a path for him to be an everyday player as soon as 2026.

In the meantime, I’m not actually all that concerned that he’s in Iowa and not starting in right field while Suzuki is out. For one, I still think it made sense to give Michael Conforto a shot, even though it’s clearly not working out just yet. For another, Matt Shaw could use the reps out there, as well. And perhaps most importantly, Alcantara still had something to prove at Triple-A. I am happy he’s getting a chance to play every day. And if he forces the issue later this season, we’ll tackle that when we need to.

The next homer of the game belongs to another top-10 Cubs prospect, Pedro Ramirez.

This one didn’t quite have the distance of Alcantara’s blast, but he still hit it VERY hard: 105.2 MPH, 396 feet.

That was also Ramirez’s third homer of the season already, and his early-season OPS is an even more impressive 1.231.

Ramirez, 22, was signed by the Cubs out of Venezuela back in 2021, and this is just his first taste of Triple-A. If he keeps hitting the way he has at pretty much every step up the ladder, he might get some top-100 prospect consideration at mid-season, too.

And that’s good news for the Cubs, whose minor league system has taken a big hit lately. Sure, we can all hope some of the established top prospects (Ethan Conrad, Kane Kepley, Kevin Alcantara, Jaxon Wiggins, Jefferson Rojas, etc.) can make some noise. But you also need some lesser guys to break out occasionally, too. Ramirez is a perfect candidate for that, so here’s hoping he can sustain this all year.

And finally, BJ Murray.

He’s the least prospect-y of this trio and had the smallest home run of the three, but, hey, I’m not gonna NOT give him some love.

So take a look at his third home run of the season, because why not:
