UPDATE: This game has been postponed until tomorrow because of the weather.
CUBS LINEUP — The Cubs dropped the opener in Cleveland yesterday, but that was all overshadowed by the bigger loss of Cade Horton. In case you missed it, Horton left the game with the trainer in the second inning with what was later called right forearm soreness. There is some optimism (right or wrong, there always is), but we won’t really know what’s what until his imaging is done. Until then, here are five options that can replace him, including one guy from outside the organization.
More to the point of this post, the Cubs play another game today. Shota Imanaga is on the mound and here’s a look at the Cubs lineup standing behind him.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Michael Busch, 1B Alex Bregman, 3B Ian Happ, LF Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Nico Hoerner, 2B Dansby Swanson, SS Moises Ballesteros, DH Matt Shaw, RF Miguel Amaya, CI look at that Cubs lineup, and I just miss Seiya Suzuki. His absence just fundamentally changes the look of the entire group. There’s such a gaping hole of right-handed power without him. It sucks.
Anyway, after a couple of games against lefties, the Cubs have drawn a righty starter this evening in Cleveland. And that means Nico Hoerner slides back down, while Michael Busch and Pete Crow-Armstrong move back up.
Moises Ballesteros is also back in there at DH, and it’s Miguel Amaya, with his reverse splits, as the man behind the plate.
Also of note, Matt Shaw is once against starting in right field, not Michael Conforto, who has five strikeouts and one walk in seven plate appearances. Suffice it to say, his audition to hang around after Suzuki returns is not yet going well.
Cleveland Guardians Lineup:
Steven Kwan, CF Angel Martinez, LF Jose Ramirez, 3B David Fry, DH Chase DeLauter, RF Rhys Hoskins, 1B Gabrial Arias, SS Austin Hedges, C Brayan Rocchio, 2BPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Shota Imanaga, LHP
Strictly speaking, Shota Imanaga’s first start of the year wasn’t good. He allowed four earned runs in just 5.0 innings of work and the biggest damage came straight out of our biggest concerns: a 3-run homer.
Buuuuuuut I’m not sure he was actually all that bad.
For one, the homer Imanaga allowed came on a pitch that was WAY below the zone and to a batter, Joey Wiemer, that started the season off hotter than literally any other player in baseball. For another, Imanaga recorded seven strikeouts on a crazy-impressive 17 whiffs.
And even better, his fastball velocity was noticeably up, especially in the first inning, which is a good sign because it had fallen dramatically last season.
2025 avg FB velo: 90.8 MPH2026 Game 1: 92.1 MPH
And seeing as he sits right on that threshold of low velocity, that extra 1.5 ish can be a huge difference maker. Bottom line here, I think Imanaga is going to have a better day today.
Cleveland Guardians: Slade Cecconi, RHP
Slade Cecconi is a 26-year-old righty who made 23 starts for the Guardians last season, pitching to a 4.30 ERA (5.00 xERA). He did well at limiting the free passes, but wasn’t much of a strikeout artist and allowed a ton of barrels and hard contact. This is the sort of guy the Cubs should absolutely beat up on.
In his first start this season, Cecconi gave up 6 earned runs in 4.1 IP to the Mariners. For his career, Cecconi has actually been slightly tougher on lefties than righties. But frankly, both types of hitters have had more than their fair share of success.
