WASHINGTON — The partial government shutdown continues through Saturday, lasting nearly 50 days.
On Friday, President Donald Trump signed a memo directing the Department of Homeland Security to pay all of its employees. Trump says the new payments are justified because the shutdown is “an emergency situation compromising the nation’s security.”
The memo clears paychecks for more than 35,000 employees. That includes FEMA and the Coast Guard.
All have gone without pay since funding stopped on Feb. 14. President Trump signed a similar memo last week directing DHS to pay TSA workers.
Airports are returning to normal.
