Italian legend Federica Pellegrini and her husband Matteo Giunta announced the birth of their second child, and second daughter, via Instagram on Thursday, April 1.

In a joint post, the couple wrote, “Ciao Rachele. La nostra piccola nata con la luna rosa,” which translates to, “Hello Rachele. Our little one born under the pink moon.”

Rachele arrived just over two years after older sister, Matilde, who was born on January 3, 2024.

Pellegrini, 37, retired from active swimming in 2021, became engaged that same year, and the couple were married on August 27, 2022. Giunta was Pellegrini’s personal coach from 2014 until her retirement in 2021.

Pellegrini is widely regarded as Italy’s greatest swimmer of all-time, with a 16-year career that earned her 26 international gold medals, including six long course and one short course World Championship titles, 19 World Championship medals in total, and 37 European Championship medals.

She was the first swimmer to break the 4-minute barrier in the 400 freestyle, doing so at the 2009 World Championships. The 200 freestyle, however, was her clear best event. She won Olympic gold in the distance at the 2008 Games, making her the first Italian woman to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming, and bronze in the same event four years prior. She finished on the podium in the same race at 7-consecutive World Championships (2005-2019) and swam in the Olympic final of the event at five consecutive Games (2004-2020).

Pellegrini’s 200 Freestyle Final Appearances — Olympics & World Championships:

In total, Pellegrini set 11 World Records in her career.

Giunta has been involved with the sport since 2008, when he joined Andrea di Nino’s ADN Swim Project as an assistant coach under Phillipe Lucas. He’s currently coaching at the Federal High Specialization Centre “Alberto Castagnetti” in Verona.

Among the athletes Giunta has coached are four-time Olympian and former World Champion Milorad Cavic, 2012 Olympic 100 butterfly silver medalist Evgeny Korotyshkin, 2012 Olympic 4×100 freestyle relay bronze medalist Sergey Fesikov, former 100 back Italian Record holder Simone Sabbioni, and as of late 2024, reigning 100 breaststroke Olympic champion Nicolo Martinenghi.
