2026 IRISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS & COMMONWEALTH GAMES TRIALS
Wednesday, April 8th – Sunday, April 12th The Aurora Sports & Leisure Centre LCM (50m) Meet Central Psych SheetThe 2026 Irish Open Championships and Commonwealth Games Trials are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, April 8th, at the Aurora Sports & Leisure Centre.
The five-day affair is the biggest domestic meet on this year’s calendar, with the competition representing a primary determiner of the Irish rosters for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, European Championships and European Junior Championships.
The Irish Open’s schedule includes heats, a junior final, B-Final and Championship Final for the 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m distances of each discipline. The Championship Final includes the fastest 10 athletes of any age from the heats, with a maximum of two non-Irish athletes within the final. The 800m and 1500m freestyle events will have Heat Declared Winner events, with the fastest heat swimming as the A-Final.
Of note, per the Irish Selection Policies, those athletes that are ultimately selected to one or more of the aforementioned competition rosters are to view the following priority tiering system in terms of coach planning, preparation and focus:

He commented, “When I went to California, it was an eye-opening experience, it was all brand new. Now, I’ve been there a bit of time it’s good to see if it works. That’s what I’m judging at the trials.
“I’m going to be very honest, if I don’t swim fast next week I’m not going to stay in California.”
IRL Commonwealth Games Selection Policy
The Nomination Trials events will include all rounds of competition in Olympic individual event performances and single gender National Team relay lead-off leg performances in events achieved at the 2025 World Championships, the 2026 Irish Open Championships for those athletes whose recognized World Aquatics nation is Ireland only, or the 2026 Aquatics GB Championships for athletes whose recognized World Aquatics nation is Great Britain only. There are seventeen individual events per gender in the Commonwealth Games program for swimming. Up to a maximum of three athletes can be nominated for selection by the National Selection Panel via each individual event. To be considered for nomination for selection to the Northern Ireland Team via an Olympic individual event(s), athletes must have achieved one or more of the Consideration Times detailed in Table 1 at the 2025 World Championships and prove competition readiness by competing in and achieving the Consideration Time detailed in Table 2 at the same events at these Irish Open Championships. To be considered for the Northern Ireland Team via an Olympic individual event(s), athletes must achieve one or more of the Consideration Times detailed in Table 1 at these Irish Open Championships.IRL European Championships Selection Policy
There are four stages of qualification for the European Championshps, including individual event performances and single-gender National Team relay lead-off leg performances at the 2025 World Championships and the 2026 Irish Open Championships. To be considered for nomination for selection to the Ireland National Team via an individual event(s) in Stage 1, athletes must have achieved one or more of the Consideration Times detailed in Table 1 at the 2025 World Championshps and prove competitive readiness by competing in and achieving the Consideration Time detailed in Table 2 in the same event(s) at these Irish Open Championships. To be considered for nomination for selection to the Ireland National Team via an individual event(s) in Stage 2, athletes must achieve one or more of the Consideration Times detailed in Table 3 at the 2026 Irish Open Championships. In Selection Stage 3, athletes may be selected to the Ireland National Team via Olympic relay events only. In Selection Stage 4, additional athletes may be nominated for selection to the Ireland National team via an individual event at the professional discretion of the National Performance Director.IRL European Junior Championships Selection Policy
To be considered for nomination for selection to the Ireland National Team via an individual event(s) in Selection Stage 1, athletes must achieve one or more of the Consideration Times detailed in Table 1 at the 2026 Irish Open Championships.
