Fourteen people were hospitalized after a driver crashed into multiple other vehicles and a Pace bus before fatally shooting themself in a west suburban intersection Friday morning, officials said.
Just before 9 a.m., a driver heading southbound on Harlem Avenue in Oak Park ran through a red light at Lake Street, Village of Oak Park officials said. The driver swerved into the northbound lane, avoiding a pedestrian in the crosswalk and instead striking two to three other vehicles, including a Pace bus, according to authorities.
After the crash, the driver pulled out a gun and fatally shot themself in the head, officials said. They were dead when authorities arrived.
A spokesperson for the Village of Oak Park said 14 people who were in the other vehicles were taken to local hospitals from the scene for treatment, though none were believed to be significantly injured.
Around 11 a.m., the intersection was still blocked by authorities as an investigation continued. Red crime scene tape wrapped around the intersection where multiple badly damaged vehicles, the Pace bus and littered debris could be seen.
