How I Pack for a 7-Day Europe Trip With a Single Carry-On ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Some people might think that packing with a carry-on only can be very restrictive, but I don’t view it that way. If you get strategic about what you pack, and plan your outfits ahead of time, you will see that you will have more than enough things available to you on your trip. I’ve been forced to pack extremely light a few times in my life: when I traveled for a year on a Broadway tour with just one suitcase, and when I lived onboard cruise ships. Both experiences truly taught me that less is more, and now, I travel light whenever possible.

Four Tops And Four Bottoms

I usually choose two pairs of shorts, a pair of jeans, and a pair of linen pants that can be worn day or night. Then, I choose a few tops that are simple and go with each bottom, but still provide variety in my outfits. At its core, this is a capsule wardrobe, and it's the perfect way to pack.

Choose Your Dresses Wisely

I then pick two to three sun dresses that will be perfect for exploring the cities, throwing on over a bathing suit, or can be dressed up as an option for the evening as well. The key here is to choose things that can be versatile, aren’t bulky, and match the style of your trip.

Don’t Go Crazy With Shoes

Melissa Cabey

For a warm-climate Europe trip, I usually bring four pairs of shoes with me, but pack three pairs. The first pair is a pair of walking sneakers (I wear white) and I wear them on the plane. This way, the bulky shoes don’t take up room in my carry-on. Then, I choose three shoes for other parts of the trip. One pair of heels for my dressier going-out moments, a pair of sandals for the beach and walking around, and a pair of ballet flats for when I want to look nice but don’t want to wear heels. All of these items are nude-colored, so they match every single item that I am bringing with me.

Beyond that, I just pack a razor, toothbrush, small tube of toothpaste, a wax hair stick in lui of hairspray, and deodorant. All of this can fit in a small toiletry bag, and it’s easy to squeeze in small spaces in my carry-on. I pack a small bag of makeup separately, and those also don’t take up much room in my carry-on.

The Remaining Items

If you have extra room in your carry-on: STOP! That is a great thing. You’re going to want a little bit of room for souvenirs, aren’t you? This is another reason why carry-on packing can be a great thing. It doesn’t give you a ton of extra room to the point where you will buy way too many things on your trip. Instead, it gives you a little bit of space (if you follow my tips) so you can be selective with your souvenir buying, and that way you will only end up with items that are special and useful to you.

Some Final Tips

The "Heavy" Rule: Always wear your heaviest items on the plane. This usually means your walking sneakers, your jeans and a light jacket or sweater. Not only does it save massive space in the bag, but European flights (and trains!) can get surprisingly chilly. The Laundry Hack: Since you’re sticking to a tight 4x4 capsule, throw a few sink-wash detergent packets in your bag. If you spill gelato on your favorite linen pants on Day 2, you can do a quick sink-wash and they'll be dry and ready by Day 4.The "Flat" Layer: Pack your flat items (like those ballet flats and your laptop) last, sliding them into the outer pockets or right on top. It keeps the structure of the bag balanced so it doesn't tip over when you're racing to catch a train. The Digital Backup: Before you zip up, take a quick photo of your open suitcase. If you are forced to gate-check at the last minute due to a full flight, you have a digital record of exactly what was inside for insurance purposes.
