(PENFIELD, N.Y. – WHEC) – Playing volleyball and basketball isn’t just about finding success on the court but feeling the support of teammates. And that’s exactly what Penfield’s Sara Petre feels.
“The culture and everyone being around,” Petre said. “The whole thing is if I got hurt and I’m just sitting there, those people are the ones that are reaching out and trying to help me through it.”
During Penfield’s Sectionals run, Petre tore her ACL, unfortunately putting that mindset into action. She has since missed a couple weeks of school for surgery and recovery.
“I was just really confused and I heard a pop,” Petre said. “And then I was scared to move so I kind of just froze on the floor and was like I don’t know what just happened.”
Since then, the active student-athlete has faced a difficult adjustment.
“You’re so used to being so active and doing sports and hanging out with your friends and doing your schoolwork and things like that are stimulating your brain, and you’re just kind of there now,” Petre said.
Even though it’s a tough injury to go through, it’s made easier by the surrounding support. Her girl’s basketball coach, Mark Vogt, was there from the start, holding her hand and talking to her through the injury.
“He was there holding my hand, talking to me, we don’t know what happened, you’re going to get through it, you’ll be fine, just don’t worry about it,” Petre said.
Her teammates have shown up and proved what true teammates are all about.
“I think literally every single one has reached out and they all chipped in together and got me gifts, fun things like a little Lego set to keep me busy and have fun things to do,” Petre said. “They’ve been very, very supportive. They keep stopping by and saying hello.”
Her teachers also made sure to keep Petre up to speed in classes she’s had to miss.
“Even a couple of my teachers reaching out, and they’re like we can call, I’m not doing much over break, we can help you with your work and get you caught up,” Petre said.
Petre hopes to return to basketball in December, which means she’ll likely miss her senior year of volleyball. There’s frustration about missing her main sport, but she still finds meaning in being part of the team.
“It’s sad not being able to participate in my senior year, but at the same time, going to the games and going to the practices and still being part of the team still means the world to me,” Petre said.
With a support system like that, she’s got the best teammates you could have. Congratulations to News10NBC’s latest Scholar Athlete of the Week!
