ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A man is facing charges from his hospital bed after police say he led them on a chase in the city this afternoon that ended in a crash.
News10NBC’s Chris Fortune was at the scene near Rohr Street and Clifford Avenue where the chase ended. The pursuit started when officers responded to a domestic situation with reports of a gun involved near Webster Avenue and Stunz Street.
The victim said the man involved left the scene and was driving a black Jeep. Police say once they found the vehicle and tried to pull him over, he fled.
The suspect crashed at the corner of Rohr Street and Clifford Avenue. Several officers were investigating the scene.
An officer stood next to what appeared to be a handgun on the grass near the scene. It had an evidence marker next to it.
“Suspect’s a 35-year-old male city resident. We did locate evidence to support the menacing with the firearm charge. And the investigation is going to continue,” said Captain Justin Stewart of the Rochester Police Department.
RPD’s pursuit policy factors in the seriousness of an incident, weather and traffic conditions, and danger to the community if a suspect flees before starting a chase. This was the second chase in the area within 24 hours.
There was another chase last night involving Monroe County sheriffs and New York State Police. Officers were chasing a reportedly stolen vehicle from Brighton into the city.
State Police’s pursuit policy encourages troopers to make every reasonable effort to apprehend suspects in a fleeing vehicle. It says pursuits stop when danger to the public outweighs the immediate capture of a suspect.
The suspect in the chase that ended on Rohr Street was taken to the hospital with a lower body injury. Another driver not involved in the chase is being treated for a minor injury from the crash.
