How AirPods interfere with connection on UA’s campus ...Middle East

When walking through the University’s campus, it is not an uncommon sight to see students with headphones or AirPods in their ears, blocking out the world around them. The trend of wearing AirPods and other bluetooth headphones has disrupted the communication and community on college campuses.

This reliance on technology plays a major role in the growing disconnect in the Gen Z community. Psychology Today explains the presence of these devices decreases spontaneous conversation as it signals to others that an individual does not want to be bothered. The presence of bluetooth devices also raises questions about social etiquette as a whole, especially in classrooms and professional environments on college campuses.

According to the Washington Times, bluetooth listening devices allow users to transform busy environments into “musical soundscapes” or “personal quiet zones.” This results in a decrease in interaction, as well as a lack of engagement with oneself and the surrounding world. This has been especially noticeable at The University of Alabama, where students say listening devices have led to disconnect between students.

University students often use bluetooth headphones due to their ease and convenience. They are used to drown out noise when walking to classes, working out or studying, and students sometimes have the devices in for hours each day.

“I never walk around without my AirPods in,” said Katie-Dru Spinner, a freshman majoring in interior design. “I feel like my walks are a lot more enjoyable when I can listen to music and stuff.”

Students said the use of these devices has led to miscommunications or people feeling ignored.

“I can definitely tell that people are a lot less connected when they use earbuds,” said Emily Hidalgo, a freshman majoring in studio art and anthropology. “Especially if they’re using two, which is why I try to use one.”

Faith York, a freshman studying chemical engineering and bluetooth headphone user, has also felt this disconnect, saying that getting people to take out their AirPods to hold a conversation is the main issue, but afterward, she is able to have a normal conversation.

Along with being ignored, York said that those who want to engage in conversation may feel offended after miscommunication or being ignored by someone wearing these bluetooth devices.

“I know some people might feel annoyed, or feeling like their voices aren’t being heard, but most likely they’re listening to music or doing their own thing,” she said.

Other members of campus mentioned a lack of social etiquette when earbuds are used in a more professional environment. Emily Davis, a UA research project coordinator, discussed less socially acceptable environments for device uses.

“If they come to your office and they keep their AirPods and you’re talking, it comes off as rude, and they might not be listening,” she said.

Hidalgo said she attempts to avoid the disconnect created by headphones and still be present to the world around her.

“It would be nice to get out of that habit and maybe talk to people more,” she said.
