Kirkwood, who joined the BBC weather team in 1998 and quickly became a familiar and much-loved presence across the broadcaster, hosted her final weather update on BBC Breakfast on Wednesday (1 April).
Speaking about the reasons behind her retirement, Kirkwood told the BBC in a new interview that she wants to spend more time with her husband, police officer Steve Randall, who she married in 2023.
She went on to reveal that she’s excited to go travelling and has already planned trips to France and Italy.
She also said that she and Steve love walking and “we want to do this while we're fit and healthy".
Elsewhere in the interview, Kirkwood spoke about the standout moments of her career, naming the Wimbledon tennis championships and Chelsea Flower Show were some of her highlights.
Announcing her departure from the show back in January, she told hosts Sally Nugent and Jon Kay: "I am going to be leaving. It's really hard for me to say this because I love my job, I love all of you guys, my Weather colleagues, every department I've worked with and, of course, all the viewers I’ve been so engaged with for many years, but it’s great! I don’t want to be coming in with a zimmerframe like, ‘I can’t reach the northern isles anymore!'."
"And to those watching and listening at home – thank you for all the kindness you have shown me over the years, being part of your mornings has been a joy. This hasn’t been an easy decision to make, but it feels like the right moment to step away. I’ll carry with me the most wonderful memories."
