RUSH, N.Y. — Communities and homeowners across the region are continuing to dry up and clean out after record rains on Tuesday brought heavy flooding to the Rochester area.
News10NBC spoke with local plumbers about how busy they’ve been and what homeowners can do to prevent flooding and flood damage in the future.
Plumber’s advice
Colin Luttrell with Colin the Plumber said his team has been getting called left and right.
“When the weather gets like this, we know in advance to prepare for it, because you can’t get enough sump pumps clearly with today,” Luttrell said.
Luttrell said when flooding happens, it is vital to have something like a sump pump. He said about half a dozen customers called the fire department to pump out their basements when there was six inches or more of water, because it becomes a foundation issue and safety concern.
“Another one is just being proactive. Make sure everything works in your basement. Check your sump pump in the winter, check them in the summer. You know, there’s solutions for this kind of stuff. This is definitely out of the normal though,” Luttrell said.
Mitigating mold growth
In the town of Rush, Luis Sierra with Sierra Environmental Solutions has been hard at work draining basements. He said he’s never gotten so many calls — 16 between Tuesday and Wednesday.
Sierra said it’s vital to drain basements within three days of flooding to prevent mold from growing.
“We had to take care of that before the mold starts growing up. So within 72 hours that they make a call like that, we can make sure that we dry it up before that,” Sierra said.
