Seiya Suzuki’s Rehab Assignment Is Set: When, Where, and How Long All Here ...Middle East

On March 14, during the World Baseball Classic, Seiya Suzuki suffered a mild PCL sprain in his knee while sliding into second base. At first, it seemed like he wouldn’t miss more than just the first seven days of the season, but the rehab process has taken a little longer than hoped. And thus, a rehab assignment in the minor leagues has been scheduled.

Here’s where he’s headed, when he’s going, and how long he’ll be there.

Seiya Suzuki Rehab Assignment

According to Marquee’s Taylor McGregor, Suzuki will head out to Knoxville on Friday to join the Cubs’ Double-A-affiliated Smokies. And that assignment will reportedly last between 3-7 days. So this is certainly longer than we hoped, but not too much longer from today.

Here’s a look at the Smokies upcoming schedule:

Friday vs Birmingham (6pm) Saturday vs Birmingham (6pm) Sunday vs Birmingham (1pm) Tuesday vs Rocket City (6pm) Wednesday vs Rocket City (11:30am) Thursday vs Rocket City (6pm) Friday vs Rocket City (6pm) Saturday vs Rocket City (6pm) Sunday vs Rocket City (1pm)

All nine of those games are home games for the Smokies, with the team hitting the road on the following Monday, which I suspect would be the dropdead date for Suzuki coming up to the Cubs.

Indeed, that’s probably at least one of the reasons the Cubs are sending him to Double-A instead of Triple-A, where the I-Cubs will be on the road until April 7. The weather in Knoxville is also fairly warm this time of year. So that’s a help, too.

As for the Cubs schedule, the short end of his rehab stint would have Suzuki playing Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with Tennessee before returning to the big league team on Monday for their series in Tampa Bay. Alternatively, if they want to skip that series, there’s a Cubs off day on Thursday with the team returning home to face the Pirates on April 10.

Obviously, if Suzuki is feeling great after those first three games, you’d rather have him come right back up, but because we don’t know if that’ll be the case AND because he’ll have to ramp back up/get his timing down, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cubs put this off until they return home for that homestand.

But I won’t pretend like missing him hasn’t already hurt this team. The lineup remains deep even without Suzuki, but … it’s a lot better with him in it. Not only does he stand a very good chance to be the team’s best hitter, but his right-handed bat also fits perfectly in between Ian Happ (third) and PCA (fifth). It will be perhaps especially missed today, when the Cubs get their first left-handed starter of the year, Yusei Kikuchi.

In the grand scheme of things, this won’t be a lengthy absence. But I do think it’s one that’s been felt nonetheless. So get out there, get better, get your timing, and get back, Seiya. We kinda need ya.
