Badger leads Mathews, but thunderstorm postpones finish ...Middle East

VIENNA — In each of the last 34 games Badger has played Mathews, the Mustangs have won. Badger looked close to snapping that skid, but Mother Nature had other plans.

Going into the fifth inning, the sound of thunder ruined any chance of Tuesday’s game finishing on time. At the time of the game’s cancellation, Badger held a 9-0 lead.

The Braves have finished just one game throughout the young season, a 13-10 loss to Brookfield.

While not a complete game, Badger coach Greg O’Brien liked what he saw out of his group.

“This was a good bounce back, because our first game, we had a bunch of errors, and gave up the win in that one,” O’Brien said. “Tonight, they came back and really set their minds to it. Did not let that happen again. I’m really proud.”

The Braves scored once in each of the first two innings, but strung together seven in the third. Sophomore catcher Kyleigh Hall hit a three-run home run in the third to help Badger pull away. She has five RBIs in the game.

This season, Mathews finds itself in a position it hasn’t often been in. After graduating eight seniors from last year’s regional finalist squad, experience is few and far between.

With just one returner in the lineup, senior Rilee Paddock, the Mustangs are starting at square one and building from there.

There’s promise, however. They just have to keep working to get there.

“This is the first time in 16 years that we don’t have a veteran cast of players coming back that are ready to take the field and just reload the gun,” Mathews coach Jim Nicula said. “We had a lot more building to do this year. We’re taking a very instructional approach teaching the game. Other than some of the older kids, we don’t have very many travel kids, which is way different than in the past. … This year, it’s just different. We don’t have the players that have the experience on the varsity game field or during the summer circuit. We’re working hard. It was a lot of instruction, just teaching the game this year, even more so than the fundamentals.”

The game will be rescheduled at a time to be determined.
