SYRACUSE, NY (WHEC) – To a roar of applause and claps, Gerry McNamara took to a podium. His speech was preceded by athletic director Bryan Blair, soon-to-be retired John Wildhack, and university president, J. Michael Haynie. As McNamara readied his first words, the crowd quieted to a handful of claps before a rogue “we love you, GMac” was exclaimed. The Orange faithful went wild again with Gerry returning, in kind, “I love you too, and you know it.”

Once a four-year starter for Jim Boeheim’s Orange, Gerry McNamara knows the impact the fandom can have. A school that consistently churns out top-five attendance numbers in the entire country, but has seen declining numbers since Boeheim retired.

“It’s terrifying, I know, but 26 years ago, the first time I walked through Gate A and saw the dome for the first time,” McNamara said. “I went home and my imagination ran wild, envisioning a packed house, championships, making threes, hopefully make making threes. And I’ll tell you what happened. I came here and for the next four years, coach, what happened? Packed house, championships, and threes, a lot of them.”

Freshly hired athletic director Bryan Blair is new to the area. He didn’t play at the dome like GMac or even attend games like the 2,000-plus fans in attendance on Monday. But the former Toledo AD and Vice President knows this building his maybe his best resource.

“We’re committed to making sure our program has the support,” Blair said. “We’re committed to weaponizing the dome. We’re committed to Gerry McNamara.”

A fandom that once stretched across New York State, but has become sparse throughout region.

“I was just up in Albany. There’s a lot of fans that follow Siena that love Syracuse as well,” McNamara, who was the Siena bench boss for the past two seasons, said. “Rochester does. There’s a lot of great areas that are within striking distance that like this is a big deal.”
