Ground stop issued at Chicago's O'Hare Airport due to thunderstorms: FAA ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A ground stop was issued for flights heading to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport due to thunderstorms Tuesday morning.

The ground stop was put in place for departures to O’Hare until at least 10 a.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Officials warned there is a “medium” chance the ground stop could be extended, however.

Waves of showers and storms were in the Chicago forecast Tuesday, along with a 30-degree temperature drop.

As of early Tuesday morning, a line of showers and lightning was passing through counties to the north and west of Chicago, Live Doppler 5 radar showed.

Southern DeKalb County was under a severe thunderstorm warning until 8:45 a.m., according to the National Weather Service, and another was in effect in LaSalle County until 9:30 a.m.

Warnings were also in place for portions of Kendall, Will, Grundy, Cook and Kankakee counties until 10:30 a.m.

Departures to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport were grounded due to thunderstorms until at least 10 a.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Officials warned there is a chance the ground stop could be extended, however.

At the same time, a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for nearly the entire Chicago area, and portions of northwest Indiana until 5 p.m. CT.

That includes DeKalb, LaSalle, Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall and Will counties in Illinois, and Jasper, Lake, Newton and Porter in northwest Indiana.

Scattered rain was expected to last through about 12 p.m., Roman said, with some heavy downpours possible.

The second wave of rain and storms comes later in the afternoon and through the evening hours, Roman said, as a cold front passing through brings temperatures from 70 degree readings into the 40s.

One or two of those storms could be on the stronger side, Roman said, with a large part of the Chicago area under a “slight” risk of severe weather.

“Really, any storms that we do have not only this morning but this afternoon could contain lightning, heavy rain, gusty winds and small, pea-sized hail,” Roman said, though not all areas will see the same risks.

“It will depend on showers and storms passing through this morning if we could see this regenerate later this afternoon,” Roman said. As the cold front passes through, that will be the trigger.”
