The Chicago area is about to head into an unsettled weather pattern, with multiple chances of severe thunderstorms in coming hours.
According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, the first of those chances of severe weather could occur overnight and persist after daybreak, with parts of the area at a “slight” risk of severe storms.
Areas along the Illinois-Wisconsin border, including McHenry, Lake, DeKalb, Kane and Cook counties, are at that “slight risk” overnight and into Tuesday morning, the second of five levels of storm risk according to the Storm Prediction Center. Parts of the area including LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy and Will counties are at a “marginal” risk, according to officials.
The main severe weather threats with any storms that develop will be gusty damaging winds and damaging hail, though a tornado cannot be ruled out.
Those storms are expected to push south, with scattered showers and storms possible during the Tuesday morning commute, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
Another round of strong-to-severe storms is expected to develop after a warm and humid day Tuesday, but the main threat area will move further to the south and east, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
Kankakee County in Illinois, as well as northern Indiana, will be at a “slight” risk of severe storms, with the remainder of the area still at a “marginal” risk.
Again, the main threats will be damaging wind gusts and some hail, though heavy rain could also cause ponding on area roadways, especially in areas impacted by the earlier rounds of showers and storms.
Those storms could persist even into Wednesday, but temperatures are also expected to drop considerably, with highs only in the 40s midweek.
That cooldown is only expected to last for a day however, with readings rebounding into the 60s on Thursday in time for the Chicago White Sox home opener at Rate Field. The Sox and Blue Jays could be dodging raindrops however, as there is another chance of showers on Thursday, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
Things will likely calm down on Friday and headed into the weekend, with more pleasant conditions in the 50s and 60s, according to forecast models.
