A Deep Dive Into the Iceman Nickname and Caleb Williams’ Stake to Claim It as His ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I didn’t have a post detailing the history of Caleb Williams and the Iceman nickname on my Chicago Bears offseason bingo card. But I’m not mad about it. Chicago’s QB1 made headlines with his attempt to trademark the alias. Since then, the story has taken a life of its own. However, no one has gotten to the bottom of the moniker’s significance and backstory.

Well, until now.

What You Need to Know About Caleb Williams and the Iceman Nickname

This is about to be a journey.

GEORGE GERVIN, THE NBA’S ICEMAN

George Gervin, seemingly taking umbrage at Bears quarterback Caleb Williams’ attempt to trademark the Iceman moniker, appears to have gotten the ball rolling on this bit of offseason discourse. And for what it’s worth, Gervin — whose other known nicknames include Ice, Iceberg Slim, and The Point Machine — is the most notable Iceman on the sports scene. However, he isn’t the first American pro sports star who can stake a claim to the Iceman alias. More on that later. But first, a look at Gervin’s résumé helps explain why he might be miffed by this ordeal.

Gervin, 73, is an all-time basketball legend. A star in the ABA and NBA, Gervin was given the nickname by teammate Roland Taylor and earned it with his play on the hardwood, “cool” demeanor on the court (when you scored the way he did, you’ve gotta be cool), and (h/t to this LA Times story from 1997) for his ability to play basketball without sweating. Again, you’ve gotta be cool when your Hall of Fame résumé includes four scoring titles and 12 All-Star nods during a career in which you averaged 25.1 points per game and shot 50.4 percent from the field.

On the one hand, the Gervin-Williams saga is weird. And I didn’t want to spend much time discussing it. But I’ll never turn down an opportunity to dive deep or get granular on odd NFL side quests. So when I learned that there were levels to this Iceman designation saga, I found myself down a rabbit hole that ultimately took me on a journey.

DRAKE, PAUL WALL CAN CLAIM ICEMAN STATUS IN HIP-HOP

While members of an older generation will point to George Gervin as their Iceman, another age group would put that label on someone else.

Millennials would be more likely to connect the nickname to Paul Wall. The Houston-based rapper is connected to the handle because of a line on his guest verse on Nelly’s hit single “Grillz.” The Jermaine Dupri-produced single earned platinum status by the Recording Industry Association of America and had more than one million digital sales. On the track, Paul Wall opens his verse by rapping the following: “What it do, baby? It’s the ice man, Paul Wall / I got my mouth lookin’ something like a disco ball.”

The Paul Wall verse is an ode to dental jewelry worn over teeth in the mid-2000s, which was popularized by Southern hip-hop and rap culture. Johnny Dang, a Houston-based jeweler whose custom grills made him a go-to guy, even makes a cameo in the video. Let’s take a trip down memory lane:

And to think, Paul Wall isn’t the only Iceman in hip-hop lore.

Drake, a five-time Grammy winner who has more hit singles than you can shake a stick at, might be at the root of the inspiration for Caleb Williams getting the Iceman nickname. Chicago’s QB1 has made his fandom of the Toronto-born entertainer known in more ways than I care to remember. When it comes to Williams’ Iceman status, this matters because Aubrey Graham was oh-so-close to making the title his.

During the summer of 2025, Drake began teasing an upcoming album titled Iceman. XXL’s C. Vernon Coleman II shared fan theories, clues, and more regarding what to expect from the album back in July 2025. Hypebeast has a definitive timeline of the rollout, which includes mentions of YouTube video teases, a lead single, a litany of Instagram posts, and a collaboration with Marvel.

There was an expectation that Drake’s album would drop last autumn. But given Drake’s ongoing battle with Kendrick Lamar and the negative connotations with anything ICE-related because of what was happening in the United States, I can understand Drake’s public relations team would have been on board with pushing the project back. Perhaps now, Drake can ride Williams’ coattails as the new Iceman. Stay tuned.

MARVEL COMICS AND MOVIE BUFFS HAVE THEIR OWN ICEMAN

As mentioned above, Drake teased an OVO x Marvel collaboration that was referencing a famous comic book character. Created by the iconic Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Iceman a.k.a. Bobby Drake debuted in a September 1963 X-Men comic. Essentially, this superhero is the chilly version of the Human Torch. This page goes deeper than I could ever want to go on the Iceman comic book character’s mystique.

Also staking a claim to Iceman status is the late Val Kilmer, whose character (Tom Kazansky) in the Top Gun movies had the nickname. Kilmer, who also starred in Tombstone, Batman Forever, and so many other classics, passed away in April 2025.

IT IS CALEB WILLIAMS’ TURN TO PLAY THE ICEMAN ROLE

While many point to the quarterback’s performance in the team’s December win against the Green Bay Packers as the first instance of the Iceman moniker emerging into the public sphere, Bleacher Nation’s first reference came on Nov. 13, 2025 — more than a month before that epic Bears-Packers tilt. However, the first known public use in a game situation came when a teammate called Williams “ice man” during the Bears’ Week 10 come-from-behind win against the New York Giants.

While Williams was coming off the field after scoring what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown against the Giants, a teammate is caught on the hot mic in this video calling Chicago’s QB “Ice man” while celebrating the score. I cannot decipher whose voice that is, but I will be forever thankful if someone can suss it out and share it with us.

Who knew that when we pushed that “You’ve Gotta See the Director’s Cut of the Bears’ Week 10 Comeback Win” post out into the world and onto your timelines that it would end up being a reference point in a larger story featuring names such as George Gervin, Drake, Paul Wall, Stan Lee, and Val Kilmer? Not me!

All in all, it seems like the nickname goes up for grabs with each passing generation. So perhaps it is fitting that Chicago’s star quarterback is next in line to hold the designation. After all, it was Chicago Bears legend Red Grange who might have the earliest claim to an Iceman-based nickname. Born Harold Edward Grange, one of the known nicknames for the football legend was The Wheaton Iceman. Before playing at an All-American level for the University of Illinois and starring for the Chicago Bears, the Hall of Famer was a standout at Wheaton High School. Hence, that particular nickname. Maybe there is a yearbook floating around somewhere with a reference to The Wheaton Iceman.

In the end, I’m not sure what comes of all this Iceman chatter. But I feel better knowing the history of the nickname. Who knew that this thing had levels and layers?
