CHARLOTTE, N.Y. — Local leaders gathered Friday at the Roger Robach Community Center in Charlotte to honor Vietnam veterans ahead of National Vietnam Veterans Day on Friday.
The event recognized the veterans who made it home and the more than 58,000 Americans who did not. It also acknowledged that Vietnam veterans didn’t get the warm welcome home veterans of other wars did.
“They took that experience and they created something so much more positive for our entire country. And they ensured that we would recognize as a nation the service that our men and women who are in uniform — and the sacrifice that they make,” said Laura Heltz, executive director at the veterans outreach center.
Vietnam War Veterans Day didn’t become an official observance until 2017.
