Alabama spring practice is in full swing, and Crimson Tide head coach took some time to speak with media on Friday.
Perhaps DeBoer’s most important comments from the availability were made regarding 5-star freshman running back EJ Crowell, who is missing valuable time with the team as he deals with an undisclosed soft tissue injury. According to DeBoer on Friday, Crowell is currently listed as week-to-week rather than day-to-day and is taking minimal reps.
“EJ’s really not taking a lot of reps, if any at all. And so that’s unfortunate, but we’ll keep working,” DeBoer said, via SI.
Crowell is one of the highest-rated prospects in Alabama’s 2026 recruiting class. The 5-star talent was considered the No. 1 RB in the country and the No. 1 player out of Alabama, as well as the No. 18 overall prospect in the nation. Only Xavier Griffin, an edge rusher out of Gainesville, Georgia, was rated higher among Alabama‘s 2026 commitments, per 247Sports.

DeBoer also took some time to evaluate the remainder of the running back room on Friday. He insisted that the group still has a lot of growing to do, but mentioned that AK Dear had “a couple of nice runs.” Dear, who is entering his second year with the Crimson Tide, has turned a few heads already this spring.
“I thought AK had a couple of nice runs in there. All of them gotta continue to grow and get better,” DeBoer said. “Daniel’s been consistent. I think he’s taking advantage of just kind of having an off season to lean up. A year ago, really from the previous 2024 season, he was still dinged up. Had to have surgery. We knew it during spring ball, had to have it after. I think that really went into him not having the off-season he’d probably like. And the season that he knows he can improve on and be better than. So those guys are all working.”
