1 in custody after body of missing 18-year-old NW Indiana student found in river: What we know ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Family and friends were in shock Thursday afternoon after the body of 18-year-old Rodrigo Montes was found in a northwest Indiana river, days after he was reported missing and the truck he had been in was pulled from the water.

“He’s a great kid,” Kate Silver, the parent of one of Montes’ friends said Thursday through tears. “This is not the outcome that anyone wanted. It’s still hard to believe.”

According to police in Lake Station, Montes’ body was found in the Deep River near 29th and Wyoming Streets about 11:20 a.m. Thursday after “lengthy and extensive operation” by dive teams with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

An autopsy was scheduled Lake County Coroner for Friday, officials said, and one person was in police custody.

As the investigation continues, here’s what we know right now.

What happened the night he went missing

Montes, a wrestler and senior at River Forest High School in Hobart, Indiana, was reported missing by family members Sunday night, where he was last seen leaving a gathering. Family members said Montes was getting a ride from a friend, but never returned home.

The search for Montes began shortly afterwards, with officials finding the truck he was riding in upside down in a river near 29th and Wyoming Streets. Photos and video from the scene showed a mangled black truck being loaded onto a tow, with its front side completely destroyed.

According to police, a suspect was in custody and charges were pending.

“Due to the nature of this case and those involved, no further information regarding the suspect will be released,” police said.

Family members say Montes was a passenger in the truck when it crashed. The driver, family members said, survived and went home after the crash.

In a message posted to Facebook, River Forest High School said it was saddened by the news, with counselors expected to be on school grounds Monday when students return from spring break.

“During this difficult time, we also ask that you remind students to avoid spreading rumors or unverified information, particularly on social media,” the school’s message went on to say.

‘Incredibly difficult time’

Family members posted a message on social media Friday, saying they were grateful for the support they’ve received.

“The messages, prayers, and support we’ve received have truly meant so much to our family during this incredibly difficult time,” the message, posted to Facebook, said. “We feel surrounded by love, and we are so grateful for each and every one of you.”
