Starmer: I won’t let the internet raise my children – or yours ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

All I have ever wanted for my children is for them to grow up healthy and happy. Frankly, it’s all any parent wants. But of course it’s much easier said than done. “What time should they go to bed?” “Can they eat that?” “Are they old enough to go there on their own?” “Are they getting enough exercise?” On and on it goes. Every day, a barrage of new decisions, anxieties and hopes.

However, one thing these days is crystal clear. Because whether teenager or toddler, the biggest concern parents have about their children now is how to keep them safe online. And for a long time, Governments have let them face this challenge alone. We know this, because we’ve asked them and they tell us.

They want help to make the right decision. Decisive action on the clear and obvious dangers. And above all, they want a Government they can trust will be motivated, not by the need to keep tech billionaires happy. But only by the need to protect their children.

That’s why, when X’s AI service, Grok, started generating nude deepfake images – we took them on. It’s why we rolled out the Online Safety Act, which has removed all sorts of harmful content from reaching our children’s eyes. And it’s why we have opened up a consultation to look at ways to make sure children have a healthy relationship with social media, with nothing off the table.

But it’s not just social media parents worry about. One of the biggest challenges is promoting a healthy relationship with screens. We all know what it’s like. It used to be TV, now it’s more often tablets or phones, but children are always drawn to them. The trouble is that now they are everywhere. And the question on every parent’s mind – “how much is too much” – has never properly been answered.

Yesterday, we published new guidance – giving clear, practical support for the first time. And drawing on the best evidence we have, we gave parents the answer they’ve been looking for. To cut to the chase, it’s one hour a day for 2-5 year olds and ideally not before bedtime. Meanwhile, for the under twos, we believe screens should be avoided completely, unless it’s a shared activity that encourages bonding and conversations.

Now, I should be clear here: this is guidance not judgement. It was developed with parents, through listening, not handed down from on high. Our goals is to try and help parents to form healthy habits. That’s why we are also encouraging our Best Start Family Hubs to help parents understand how to replace screentime with healthier alternatives that encourage families to play and bond together.

But we’re also supporting working families directly with the cost of living. Because something that is stark in the evidence is that it’s children whose parents are hard-pressed and time-poor that tend to have more screen time. That’s why our efforts on online safety are part of a bigger cause. I believe every child should go as far as their talent takes them. That their background, their circumstances, or where they come from should not dictate their opportunities in life. And so we’ve cut £8000 on average from childcare costs for working families. We’ve opened new breakfast clubs and school-based nurseries across the country. And next week, we will scrap the two-child limit and lift nearly half a million children out of poverty.

Because what parents want for their children, this Government wants for every child. And no matter the resistance, we are determined to help keep them safe online.
