The grand opening of Uniqlo’s new store on Michigan Avenue drew long lines Friday, with a sea of shoppers wrapped around the block as the popular Tokyo fashion brand makes its return to the Mag Mile.
The store, located at 600 N. Michigan Avenue, comes four years after its previous location on Michigan Avenue, which opened in 2015, closed its doors. Doors officially opened at 10 a.m., with special grand opening giveaways and a live Japanese Taiko drum performance.
“UNIQLO returns to Chicago’s Magnificent Mile opening its flagship store on Michigan Ave at 600 Michigan Avenue on March 27th, as the brand continues its expansion throughout the U.S,” the store’s opening announcement said. “The new store will offer UNIQLO’s full lineup of LifeWear for men and women, in addition to community-focused initiatives and exclusive UTme! designs created with local artists, cultural partners, and institutions, such as The Art Institute of Chicago.”
The Michigan Avenue location is part of an 11-store expansion from Uniqlo, with more stores opening next spring and summer in San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, Maryland and Washington D.C. One of the stores, Uniqlo said, is being planned for the Chicago suburbs, at Oakbrook Mall.
“Our strategy is about thoughtful growth – opening the right stores in the right places – while ensuring every location reflects our customer’s voices and delivers a meaningful, high-quality experience,” Fuminori Adachi, UNIQLO USA CEO said in a previous release.
According to the release, the new stores will include self-checkout stations, alternation services and RE.UNIQLO donation bins. Some stores will also offer customizable t-shirt and tote-bag services, as well as embroidery.
The stores mark the third and fourth locations in Illinois, with other Uniqlo locations downtown on State Street and in Schaumburg at Woodfield Mall.
The brand began in 1984 in Hiroshima, Japan, selling unisex casualwear and was originally called “Unique Clothing Warehouse.” The apparel brand is part of Fast Retailing Ltd., which also owns Theory, J Brand and Helmut Lang.
