Chicago Cubs Prospect Notes: Triple-A Opening Day, Wiggins, Rojas, Trice, Armas, Hartshorn, More ...Middle East

Some Cubs prospect and minor league notes for you while you await the return of the big league team tomorrow, and anticipate the open of the Triple-A season tonight!

The Iowa Cubs kick things off at 7pm CT tonight, with Javier Assad on the mound:

.@IowaCubs starters for the first homestand: -Friday: Javier Assad. -Saturday: Will Sanders.-Sunday: Jaxon Wiggins.

— Tommy Birch (@TommyBirch) March 26, 2026 Obviously looking forward to that Jaxon Wiggins start on Sunday. He gets the profile treatment from Tommy Birch:

“He’s just a different cat.”Despite being under a strict pitch count with the @IowaCubs at the end of the 2025 season, it was clear that Jaxon Wiggins had some very special traits. t.co/IfsXRW3R4l

— Tommy Birch (@TommyBirch) March 27, 2026 Currently, all of the Cubs’ notable minor league reclamation signings show on the Iowa Cubs roster (Corbin Martin, Collin Snider, Jeff Brigham, Kyle Wright, Vince Velasquez, Trent Thornton, and Yacksel Rios), which means no one has opted out and departed just yet. Pretty incredible given the volume and the full group ahead of them in the big leagues, and undoubtedly speaks to the desire among so many pitchers of this classification who want to be able to work with the Cubs to get their careers back on track. All that said, most of these guys are going to have additional opt-out opportunities coming, and I have to assume not everyone will stick around if they don’t get a shot by June. The Double-A Knoxville Smokies, High-A South Bend Cubs, and Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans start their seasons next week. Look at the adjustment mid-swing to get the hands up and in on this one. Watching only this view, I kinda can’t believe it led to a home run, and that is pretty darn encouraging about Jefferson Rojas:

I mentioned earlier than #Cubs prospect Jefferson Rojas clubbed a home run earlier today. Now, check it out in beautiful slow motion. pic.twitter.com/MrO48whMI8

— Josh Norris ? (@jnorris427) March 24, 2026 Very cool to see Carter Trice get a little love from MLB Pipeline on its All-Spring Breakout Team:

“OF: Carter Trice (CHC NR) — 3-for-3, HR, 2 RBIThe 2023 12th-rounder tied the Spring Breakout record with three hits — and was the first to do so off the bench. Coming in as a pinch-hitter, he reached on an RBI infield single before lining a single to right and capping his day with a solo homer to right-center. Largely a catcher during his time in the Minors, Trice split his time between left and first base in the showcase and was perfect in the field as well.”

Some eyes-on observations:

Thoughts on @Cubs vs @Padres Spring Breakout game.– Kane Kepley is impressive. Plus defender, can run, contact + draws BBs. – Ariel Armas getting deserved hype. Elite defensive catcher who hit a HR last night. If offense grows, look out.– Padres have a STUD in Ethan Salas.

— Alex Cohen (@voiceofcohen2) March 22, 2026 Given that Ariel Armas is considered an exceptional defender behind the plate and great at working with pitchers, it wouldn’t take a lot of offense for him to become a very valuable prospect. Armas, 23, was the Cubs’ 5th rounder in 2024, and he hit .234/.325/.347/95 wRC+ at High-A last year. He didn’t strike out much and took his walks, but there wasn’t a lot of power (which, at the higher levels, might neutralize the overall production quite a bit). Need that part to come along if he’s going to make that jump from “possible future part-time back-up catcher” to “sure-fire future big league back-up or part-time starter.” Between Armas and Owen Ayers, the Cubs have some really interesting catching prospects at the High-A/Double-A level this year.

— Carson Wolf (@TheWrigleyWire) March 22, 2026 Armas, by the way, gets some love at The Athletic as an underrated prospect in the Cubs’ system whom the insiders in the org really love. Also included on the list? Outfield prospect Josiah Hartshorn, whom we can’t wait to see debut this year:

“If one were to take a quick poll of Cubs executives and coaches across the organization as to who will end up on top 100 lists that already isn’t on them, Hartshorn would likely be the name heard most. A sixth-round pick last summer who was given a $2 million bonus to buy him out of his commitment to Texas A&M, Hartshorn, who turned 19 on Feb. 2, even got a start during the spring, a rarity for such a young player ….

A thickly built player with deceptively great athleticism, Hartshorn just looks like he belongs when he steps in the box. A switch-hitter who can play all over the outfield — though he’ll be given a lot of time in center to start — he has an advanced approach at the plate and has quickly proven to be a very knowledgeable hitter who has all the physical traits teams look for.”

Fun call, fun shot:

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) March 22, 2026 The 19″ induced vertical from a guy who just turned 19 and hasn’t yet made his pro debut is quite exciting:
