I have confirmed with multiple sources that this is a done deal. What a way turn the Opening Day loss around.

Unfortunately, I don’t have details on the terms of the extension just yet, but we did know this was a distinct possibility, as Nico Hoerner had otherwise just begun his final season on the last extension he signed with the Cubs back in 2023.

This is the second major extension the Cubs have signed in the last week, with Pete Crow-Armstrong selling the Cubs his first two years of free agency five years before they arrive. The Cubs clearly believe they have a bit of a window now, and locking up Hoerner beyond 2026 is a clear sign of faith in this team to win. Nico Hoerner is coming off a career-best season in 2025, featuring all of his usual skills (great baserunning, great contact, great defense), but throwing in more power and OBP than usual, especially after July 29: .313/.361/.431 (123 wRC+). If he were to continue down that path this season, his bag in free agency would have been ENORMOUS. That said, and for those reasons, I don’t expect this deal to be particularly team-friendly. That’s okay, though. We love Nico Hoerner around these parts. This is going to land as a fairly big blow to Matt Shaw, who was squeezed out of third base by Alex Bregman and out of second base in the future now by Nico Hoerner. But he’s already expanded his positional versatility and may just have to keep that up if he wants to maintain everyday chances. Generally speaking, Nico Hoerner is one of the most beloved Cubs of this era. His production carries the day, but his effort, demeanor, personality, etc. It’s all baked in. Cubs fans love him and they are going be thrilled with this decision.***
As a reminder, the Cubs still have a TON of outgoing free agents at the end of this season, including (but not limited to): Shota Imanaga, Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki, Jameson Taillon, Matthew Boyd, Carson Kelly, Hoby Milner, and others. I do not know if they are currently exploring deals with any of the above, but you can’t entirely rule it out.
