After smashing the NCAA record last night in the 1650, Florida first-year Ahmed Jaouadi has opted for the morning off, dropping out of the 200 free, where he was the 45th seed. Jaouadi, who represents Tunisia internationally, was seeded with a 1:33.34, his personal best from the last month, when he finished 14th in the prelims of the event at SECs. Seeded so far down, Jaouadi’s scratch isn’t all that surprising, especially as he is the 3rd seed in tomorrow’s 500.
The Gator is not the lone swimmer to drop out of the 200 free as NC State’s Jerry Fox and ASU’s Jonny Kulow have both dropped their first individual event. Fox was the 41st seed, entered with a 1:32.94, while Kulow was the 43rd seed with an entry time of 1:33.06. The pair each swam on their school’s 800 free relay, with Fox anchoring NC State’s 5th place relay in 1:32.31, while Kulow brought ASU home on 1:31.88. Kulow was also a part of his school’s meet record-setting 200 Medley relay earlier in the night, when he split 17.98 to hold off a fast-charging Josh Liendo. The Sun Devil’s scratch could be due to ASU’s coaches’ plans to use him on five relays, but it could also be to give the senior some rest before tomorrow’s 50 free, especially as he likely will be on the 200 free relay this evening.
The highest-seeded scratch of the morning was Texas’s Garrett Gould. The sophomore sprinter dropped the 100 fly, where his 45.24 made him tied as the 28th seed. Gould, like Kulow, swam last night on his school’s 200 medley relay, bringing Texas home in 18.58 to win 3rd place.
