Scott Van Pelt is the latest to react to North Carolina’s decision to part ways with head coach Hubert Davis.

Van Pelt said the move “makes sense to him” as an outsider looking in despite what Davis has meant to the Carolina family.

After 5 seasons, Davis was fired by North Carolina on Tuesday night. After making a national championship appearance in his first season, the Tar Heels have failed to capitalize on that momentum. UNC missed the tournament the following year and has lost in the first round the past two seasons.

“I believe Carolina is one of the very short names on the list of true blue bloods that exist in the sport, and watching them be a first-four team, watching them allow a lead to slip away in the first round, it just didn’t feel like Carolina basketball…,” Van Pelt said. “It just felt like this was the time that the Carolina family might look outside of its own to find someone to lead this program. Everybody that knows Hubert Davis adores him, and I’m in that group, but it makes sense to me, from the outside looking in, that Carolina would look to someone else to lead this basketball program given all those banners that hang inside the Dean Dome.”
