A family is seeking justice after a father of three was shot and killed as he searched for his stolen truck on Sunday morning.
According to Chicago police, officers were called to the 8000 block of South Hermitage at approximately 12:29 a.m. Sunday.
When they arrived, they found a man lying on the ground. The man was pronounced dead after suffering a single gunshot wound to the head.
The victim has now been identified as 36-year-old Michael Hunter, and Tuesday night his family, friends and loved ones gathered to push for justice as they seek his killer.
“Michael meant everything to me,” Ryan Mitchell, Hunter’s fiancé, said. “He was my heart, my soul. He was the provider, the protector of the household.”
“He was there for me,” his stepdaughter Brooklyn Nailer added. “He was the father figure I never got to enjoy.”
The pain was too much for Michael’s father, who has been wearing his son’s UPS jacket in the aftermath of his death.
It’s unclear what led to Hunter’s death, but what is known is he was looking for his stolen truck, asking potential witnesses in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood if they had witnessed anything.
He had just returned from a week on the road with his father, and was looking forward to spending spring break with his kids when his life was tragically cut short.
“I don’t accept this I will not allow this to continue to happen Michael’s death will not be in vain, this will be my life’s mission,” Mitchell said.
A $10,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
“We can no longer continue to perpetuate this cycle of where we are silent while our brother’s die to senseless gun violence,” his friend Michelle Patterson said.
Hunter left behind three children and a grieving fiancé, according to his family.
