The first few years of Braxton Jones’ career arc were fun to follow, but now it is time to write a new chapter in this story.
And, for what it’s worth, Jones sounds motivated as heck to do so after signing a one-year contract to return for a fifth season with the Chicago Bears. The 26-year-old Southern Utah University product will enter the 2026 season battling to win the starting left tackle job. This isn’t an unfamiliar spot for Jones, mind you. After all, he was in a similar situation last offseason. But his tone going into this year’s competition sounds intense.
Over at the Bears’ official website, Larry Mayer gets some good quotes from Braxton Jones, who sounds eager to win back his starting job. Jones should have no shortage of motivating factors to pull from, including his benching during the team’s Week 4 win against the Las Vegas Raiders. Reading this quote stopped me in my tracks:
“It was a big learning moment for me … just putting that chip back on my shoulder and also checking myself for where I was and what I need to be better at. Looking back at it now, I wouldn’t say I’m happy about it. But I’ve learned a lot from it and I’ve grown from it and I’ve realized maybe that’s something that needed to happen for me to boost my career again.”
2025 YEAR IN REVIEW: Chicago Bears Offensive Lineman Braxton Jones
Sometimes, getting dealt a slice of humble pie can put things into perspective. And it sure seems like Jones being benched in place of rookie Ozzy Trapilo and second-year undrafted free agent Theo Benedet was humbling. It definitely sounds like that experience is something that is serving as a chip on Jones’ shoulder as he tries to get back into the swing of things in 2026.

To be clear, it won’t be an easy journey for Braxton Jones as he heads on the road to earning a starting spot once again. In addition to Theo Benedet serving as potential competition, the Bears signed former Cleveland Browns first-round pick Jedrick Wills Jr. to spice things up at left tackle and give that position battle some extra juice. Even with Benedet’s return and Wills’ arrival, there is a clear path he can take by playing his way into a job he held for three seasons.
A Day 3 pick who was part of Ryan Poles’ first NFL Draft as the Chicago Bears’ general manager, Jones went from being a fifth-round pick (168th overall) to a rookie starting at left tackle in Week 1. From there, Jones would establish himself as a respectable offensive lineman over the next few seasons while protecting the blindside of quarterbacks Justin Fields, Trevor Siemian, Nathan Peterman, Tim Boyle, Tyson Bagent, and Caleb Williams. But a serious leg injury at the end of the 2024 season put him behind the eight-ball to start the 2025 campaign. And while Jones would go on to win the starting left tackle job to begin the year, he wasn’t long for the gig.
There aren’t too many players who are more polarizing among Bears fans than Braxton Jones. The 2026 season will provide an opportunity for Jones to prove doubters wrong and believers right. If healthy, I think Jones can hold down the fort protecting QB1’s blindside. His Pro Football Focus grades and blockng win rates at ESPN have been respectable when he was healthy. We didn’t get a healthy Jones in 2025, and I think it showed up in his play. Hopefully, Jones will be good to go from a medical standpoint so he can give it his all in this left tackle competition. But if he can’t, I hope the Bears are prepared with worthwhile contingency plans.
