ALBANY, N.Y. — Around 470,000 New Yorkers stand to lose their health insurance coverage now that the federal government has approved New York State’s request to eliminate what is known as the Essential Plan.

The state asked for the approval after the GOP mega-bill, passed last summer, cut the funding that New York says made the plan financially viable.
Coverage is protected, however, for the 1.3 million enrollees whose income is below 200% of the federal poverty line. Their coverage is protected under the state’s Basic Health Program.
