Spring Training wraps up today, and just like that, the 2026 MLB regular season has arrived. Things get underway tomorrow when the San Francisco Giants host the New York Yankees at Oracle Park in a standalone Opening Day matchup — one that will also mark Netflix’s first MLB broadcast. We’ll dive into that, plus a couple of notable prospect decisions, including Konnor Griffin not making an Opening Day roster and Kevin McGonigle earning his way onto one, and more.
MLB Opening Night Goes Streaming as Yankees, Giants Kick Off 2026 Season
The 2026 MLB season opens Wednesday night with a historic twist as the San Francisco Giants host the New York Yankees at Oracle Park, in the first-ever live MLB broadcast on Netflix. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. CT, with a pregame show beginning at 6 p.m. CT as part of MLB Opening Night, marking a new chapter in how baseball reaches a global audience.
The matchup itself brings plenty of intrigue. The Yankees, led by Aaron Judge, are coming off another 94-win season but are still looking to break through after falling to the Toronto Blue Jays in last year’s ALDS. Meanwhile, the Giants begin a new chapter under first-year manager Tony Vitello, who jumps straight from the college ranks to the majors as he looks to guide a team searching for consistency after an 81-81 finish in 2025.
On the mound, it’ll be Logan Webb for San Francisco and Max Fried for New York to open the season.

Prospect Decisions Split: Konnor Griffin Waits, Kevin McGonigle Breaks Through
Two of the game’s most intriguing young talents are heading in opposite directions as Opening Day arrives.
In Pittsburgh, the debut of top prospect Konnor Griffin will have to wait. The Pirates reassigned the 19-year-old shortstop to minor-league camp after a spring in which he flashed power but struggled for consistency, hitting .171 despite four home runs. Griffin entered camp with a real chance to make history as a teenage Opening Day starter, but for now, Pittsburgh will turn to Nick Gonzales at shortstop. The long-term outlook hasn’t changed; Griffin is still viewed as a cornerstone piece, and his debut this season feels inevitable, but the organization is opting for patience as it navigates a pivotal year built around Paul Skenes.

The Detroit Tigers are fast-tracking one of the game’s premier prospects, with Kevin McGonigle set to break camp as their Opening Day shortstop. The 21-year-old, widely viewed as the No. 2 prospect in baseball, earned the promotion after a strong spring and a rapid climb through the minors that showcased one of the most advanced hit tools in the game.
McGonigle’s rise has been fueled by elite bat-to-ball skills and strike-zone control, consistently producing while being one of the youngest players at every level he’s reached. Questions about his long-term defensive home remain, but the Tigers are clearly betting on the bat, one they believe can anchor the top half of their lineup for years to come.
There’s added incentive here, too. A strong rookie season could net Detroit extra draft capital through MLB’s Prospect Promotion Incentive program.
© Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn ImagesWhile there’s still no shortage of teams playing the service time game with top prospects, it feels like more and more prospects are making their way to their major league clubs sooner than ever.
The Prospect Promotion Incentive (PPI) was implemented in the 2022 CBA to encourage teams to promote their top prospects to the big leagues as early as possible. The PPI awards teams who promote top prospects to the majors before Opening Day with draft picks if those prospects perform. Six clubs have been awarded PPI picks since 2022.
Hopefully, teams continue striving to take a swing at extra draft picks through the PPI system. Marquee prospects being fast-tracked to the majors makes the MLB Draft more exciting, something the league has worked toward in recent years. Historically, for the casual observer, it’s been hard to care much about prospects being drafted when you assumed it would be years before they cracked a major league roster. If you can follow the top draft prospects’ seasons all spring and see them at least fighting for a major league spot the following season, that makes it more interesting.
Extra Innings
In other notable prospect decisions, the New York Mets are bringing top outfield prospect Carson Benge north after an impressive spring, where he hit .366 and consistently put together competitive at-bats. Benge will open the season as the team’s starting right fielder, completing a rapid rise that included just 24 games at Triple-A. — Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) March 17, 2026 St. Louis is following the same path as the Tigers and Mets, promoting top prospect JJ Wetherholt to their Opening Day roster. Wetherholt was the seventh overall selection in the 2024 MLB Draft and split time between Double-A and Triple-A last season.
