Alabama men’s basketball made history Sunday night in Tampa, as it advanced to a fourth straight Sweet 16 for the first time in program history.
The program had previously advanced to three straight Sweet 16 appearances twice. It first accomplished the feat under former head coach Wimp Sanderson from 1985 to 1987, and did most recently from 2023 to 2025, which included a trip to the program’s first-ever NCAA Final Four and third-ever Elite Eight.
The Crimson Tide sits among elite company, as it is currently one of just three schools to advance to four straight Sweet 16s, alongside SEC foe Tennessee and 2025 NCAA runner-up Houston.
Head coach Nate Oats said postgame that he believes Volunteers head coach Rick Barnes and Cougars head coach Kelvin Sampson are two of the best coaches in their era. He added that he has a long way to go before he reaches their respective levels of success.
“Both their teams play better defense on a consistent basis,” Oats said. “If I can get our guys to guard like both those two guys get their teams to guard, we’ll be playing a long time this year. That’s the goal. So that’s a pretty good company to be in.”
Alabama will enter Friday’s Midwest Regional semifinal with a 3-10 record in the Sweet 16. Before Oats’ arrival, the program recorded just one win in the second weekend of the NCAA tournament, when former head coach Mark Gottfried’s squad stunned 5-seed Syracuse 80-71 in the 2004 tourney.
The Crimson Tide will continue its March Madness run on Friday in Chicago, facing the 1-seed Michigan Wolverines at the United Center. Tipoff is set for 6:35 p.m. CT, and can be streamed on TBS.
